Early application is encouraged, as this job posting will remain open until filled. The position will run from January 4, 2027, to June 25, 2027. End dates are flexible within the time frame but with a maximum 6-month allotment. Preference will be given to applicants for a full 6-month commitment.

What We Can Achieve Together

The Fire Management Technician participates in wildland fire operations, including burn unit preparation, ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, equipment maintenance, and other tasks as assigned. Positions will be focused on the ecological management and restoration of longleaf pine sandhill ecosystems associated with the Chattahoochee Fall Line (CFL) for rare fire adapted species such as red-cockaded woodpecker, gopher tortoise, and carnivorous plants.

Other tasks may include fence removal, timber marking, and general stewardship work.

As part of ongoing professional development, technicians will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state, and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an administratively determined, short term federal employee).

May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

Other opportunities may be presented to assist partner agencies such as the US Forest Service at Tuskegee National Forest, US Fish & Wildlife at Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, and nearby Georgia Dept.

of Natural Resources (GA-DNR) Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). Our team consists of a dedicated group who are leading the conservation effort on multiple fronts and who expertly bring strategy and action together.

What You’ll Bring
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT

  • Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Prescribed Fire Manager and the TNC Fire Management Manual.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g., First Aid, CPR)
  • Ability and willingness to follow instructions from colleagues.
Desired Qualifications
  • Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience on at least 30 prescribed burn operations, preferably in the longleaf pine range.
  • Basic First Aid and CPR, Wilderness First Responder, and/or Emergency Medical Technician training.
  • Completion of Wildland Fire Chain Saws (S-212).
