The position will run from January 4, 2027, to June 25, 2027. End dates are flexible within the time frame but with a maximum 6-month allotment. Preference will be given to applicants for a full 6-month commitment.
What We Can Achieve Together:The Chattahoochee Fall Line (CFL) Senior Burn Crew Member oversees a team of 3 Fire Management Technicians in wildland fire activities as directed by a Burn Boss or other command position and participates in preparing fire lines, participating in prescribed fire operations (including serving in fireline leadership roles), maintaining equipment, post-burn monitoring, and other tasks. They may perform other preserve management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Senior Burn Crew Member is responsible for managing the seasonal fire crew’s shared housing, ensuring the residence is properly maintained, modeling respectful community living standards, and identifying and addressing interpersonal conflicts promptly to support a positive crew experience.
As part of the SBCM’s ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wild land fire suppression activities in partnership with other non‑profits, local fire departments, and local, state and federal agencies, tribal or indigenous, either as a TNC employee, or as a volunteer or short‑term employee of the partner entity (such as an Administratively determined, short term federal employee).
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE
- Function as both leader and member of a work team, in a high‑stress team environment.
- Convey work instructions to subordinates.
- Works under close supervision of the Burn Boss during fire operations.
- Perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.
- Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Assist with administrative tasks necessary for documenting work activities as requested by the supervisor.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record

Other opportunities may be presented to assist partner agencies such as the US Forest Service at Tuskegee National Forest, US Fish & Wildlife Service at Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, and nearby Georgia Dept.

- High school diploma and at least 12 months as an active‑duty Firefighter Type 2, Burn Crew Member, or similar primarily fire agency position.
