Multiple postdoctoral positions are available with the Emory Global Diabetes Research Center (EGDRC; ) and the Georgia Center for Diabetes Translation Research (GCDTR; ) at Emory University in Atlanta, USA. EGDRC and GCDTR have extensive U.S. and global collaborations spanning diabetes, cardiovascular disease (CVD), brain health and cognitive aging, and related chronic diseases.

JOB DETAILS:

  • Fellows will engage in innovative observational, experimental, and translational research focused on the biology, technology, prevention, and precision medicine of diabetes and related cardiometabolic conditions in the United States and globally.
  • Opportunities also include investigating the relationships among diabetes, cardiometabolic health, cognitive aging, and other brain-related outcomes.
  • Fellows will work with national and international teams to develop research questions, write grants and manuscripts, design studies, and conduct rigorous analyses of complex data from population-based cohorts and surveillance studies, electronic health records, large surveys, and clinical and community-based intervention trials.
  • Available data span multiple dimensions, including imaging, cognitive assessments, biomarkers, genomics, wearable and sensor data, and other digital health data streams.
  • Research responsibilities may include developing statistical analysis plans, harmonizing data across studies and cohorts, and applying state-of-the-art epidemiologic, statistical, and computational methods to longitudinal and high-dimensional data.
  • Depending on their interests and expertise, Fellows may apply AI/ML, deep learning, and other data science approaches and participate in clinical and pragmatic trials and implementation science projects.
  • Additional opportunities include developing study protocols and research proposals, designing data collection tools and digital health studies, mentoring junior researchers, and leading peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations.
  • Fellows will work with faculty including Drs. Venkat Narayan, Allan Levey, Mohammed Ali, Felicia Goldstein, Ram Jagannathan, and Shivani Patel, as well as other investigators across Emory and collaborating institutions.
  • They will also have opportunities to collaborate with experts in AI/ML, population genomics, and computational methods, including Drs. Anant Madabhushi, Yan Sun, and Joyce Ho.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
  • The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
  • Designs and evaluates experiments.
  • Develops new ideas that promote current research.
  • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
  • May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
  • May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff.
  • Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
  • The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
  • Appointments cannot exceed five years.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field.
  • Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
  • The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
  • Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • We seek candidates with an MD and/or PhD in epidemiology, biostatistics, nutrition, behavioral sciences, demography, computer science, data science, biomedical informatics, medicine, or a related field.
  • Candidates should have strong scientific writing, quantitative, statistical, and programming skills, with experience analyzing complex longitudinal data, particularly electronic health records, cohort studies, and large survey datasets.
  • Experience developing peer-reviewed manuscripts is highly desirable.
