Cable Technician I (Communications Technician I)
Overview
We are seeking multiple Cable Technician I professionals to join our team. This role is ideal for individuals looking to start or grow their career in structured cabling and data center environments. The Technician I will develop foundational skills and contribute as a member of a technical team supporting commercial and data center projects.
Top Skills Required

- Experience working in a commercial environment (data center experience preferred)
- Ability to commute within a reasonable distance to the data center
- Cat5 / Cat6 installation and termination
- Rack and stack, rack assembly, and rack installation
- Ladder rack and cable tray installation
- Fiber optic cabling and testing
- Cable testing (Fluke or similar tools)
- CCTV and security systems installation
- Crimping and punch-downs
- Troubleshooting connectivity issues
- Basic project coordination or project management exposure
The Communications Technician I is an entry-level role (0-1 year of experience) responsible for learning and performing structured cabling tasks while supporting a team in commercial and data center environments.
Key Responsibilities
Cable Installation & Routing
- Install work area outlets in floors, walls, and modular furniture
- Route cable through walls and ceilings using fish tape or similar tools
- Route cable through modular furniture systems
- Organize, dress, and label cabling prior to termination
- Properly support cables using cable trays, J-hooks, D-rings, bridal rings, and trapeze systems
- Determine cable length, slack, and labeling standards
- Mount and install backboards, racks, patch panels, and cross-connects
- Install fiber optic enclosures and associated hardware
- Perform grounding for racks, equipment, and cabling
- Perform fire-stopping procedures on fire-rated walls
- Install sleeves and route cable through penetrations
- Terminate low-voltage devices
- Assist with testing and certification of copper and fiber cabling
- Accurately complete required documentation (timesheets, work orders, material tracking, etc.)
- Follow all company, customer, and industry safety and quality standards
- Support team members and complete additional responsibilities as assigned
Technicians should be familiar with standard hand tools, including:
- Screwdrivers (Phillips and flathead)
- Drywall saw
- Tape measure and level
- Snips and pliers (needle nose and channel locks)
- Hammer and wrench set
- Cable stripper
- Flashlight and gloves
Candidates may be evaluated on:
- Fiber and copper cabling knowledge
- Splicing concepts and methods
- IDF/MDF installation experience
- Punch-down techniques and timing expectations
- Understanding of color codes
- Cable testing tools (e.g., Fluke/Versiv)
- Quality assurance practices (labeling, termination, cable management)
- Troubleshooting and problem-solving approach
- Experience working in live data center environments
- Opportunity to work on large-scale data center builds
- Consistent project pipeline with stable scheduling
- Minimum full-time hours with potential for additional overtime
- Hands-on experience in new-build data center environments

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $24.00/hr.
