Position: Equipment Operator - Transmission (GTC)
Location: Gray

Position Summary

The Transmission Equipment Operator is an entry level position in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical transmission systems. This position works at various locations and may also be required to travel to another state depending on customer demands.

Essential Functions
  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance, or repair work of energized and de-energized overhead systems.
  • String overhead wire.
  • Set poles and anchors.
  • Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cutouts, crossarms, insulators, switches, and switch gear.
  • Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
  • Frequently work with energized high‑voltage systems requiring skill and care to protect the lives of the employee and others.
  • Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
  • Perform rigorous physical labor.
  • Understand proper use of company radio.
  • Understand operation of heavy equipment.
  • Understand basic rigging, handlines, and lineman knot tying.
  • Understand proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Receive and follow directions.
  • Learn basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Possess a basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Be familiar with induced voltage.
  • Assist with the installation and hookup of a single‑phase transformer.
  • Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
  • Understand basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
  • Work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
  • Understand minimum approach distance.
  • Check voltage on transformers.
  • Understand flag and tag procedures.
  • Install and remove a service.
  • Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
  • Know when to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Create and use a hand line.
  • Use Kellum grips appropriately.
  • Identify different types of materials used in line work.
  • Work outside frequently in inclement weather.
  • Glove/work high voltage transmission lines.
  • Perform all other related work as required to complete the job.
Minimum Requirements
  • 1–2 years of experience.
  • Read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
  • A Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.
  • Travel long distances on short notice, when required.
  • Work for extended periods at various locations, when required.
  • Lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly.
  • Work overtime when requested.
  • Work outside of the normal work schedule, including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel; and reach with hands and arms.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions at construction job sites. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. This position is performed in outside weather conditions.
