Position: CALTRANS EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II
Location: South Fulton

Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor and functional direction of a Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead worker, the incumbent operates equipment identified as, but not limited to, passenger vehicles, mini to 3/4-ton pickups, vans, and 3/4-ton utility bodies; 1-ton and up trucks including two‑axle and three‑axle dump trucks; construction equipment including mowers, graders, tractors, loaders, excavators, backhoes, forklifts; and snow removal specialty equipment such as plows, plows with wings, and blowers used by the assigned unit.

The operator works individually or with a crew performing tasks related to snow removal and highway maintenance work. In the operator’s absence, a Caltrans Maintenance Lead worker or other qualified person may be in charge. The operator may work for other supervisors and/or units as workload requires. Must possess a valid Class A driver’s license with tank endorsement.

Required to work in a wide range of conditions, including heat up to 120 °F, cold to –15 °F, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. During the winter months the workweek is normally 5 days of 8‑hour days. During the summer months workweeks may be changed to 4 days of 10‑hour days. Incumbents may be scheduled to work the night shift as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor and may be required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, special projects, or supervisor discretion.

Desirable Qualifications

Knowledge of materials, methods, equipment, and tools used in highway maintenance and construction;
California Vehicle Code provisions regarding loading and operation of motor vehicles; and rules and regulations pertaining to highway maintenance practices. Possession of a valid Class A California Commercial Driver License with a minimum tank endorsement; hazardous material endorsement highly desirable. Ability to work safely around high-density traffic and to work effectively alone or with others.
