Special Education Teacher
Summary
Under direction of the school principal and special education supervisor, the special education teacher provides direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities and works in collaboration with the general education teacher. The teacher monitors and evaluates outcomes for students with disabilities and assists in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP).

Physical demands as required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. Special requirements: required to attend school meetings, programs, and activities outside the instructional day per the Montgomery County Education Association agreement. Teachers employed in special education schools or discrete special education service models must successfully complete specific courses provided by MCPS, particularly courses in behavioral management including non‑violent crisis interventions.
Teachers in these identified schools and programs are required to support behavioral interventions.

Knowledge, Skills, AbilitiesKnowledge of the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) curriculum for the grade/content range of the position, MCPS special education program, IEP, learning theory, differentiated instruction, data collection, best instructional practices, research‑based reading instruction, multicultural education, assessments, methods of teaching elementary math for elementary positions, ESSA 2015, IDEA 2004, and state and federal policies and procedures related to special education. Ability to provide instructional support, work well with students with disabilities, teachers, and parents/guardians;
adapt instructional programs and materials appropriately; excellent communication skills; knowledge of and ability to apply the six performance standards established for the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher Professional Growth System (TPGS).
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in special education. Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment. Student teaching in the specific area of exceptionality or two years teaching experience at a level appropriate to the assignment (elementary or secondary). Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered. Certificate required: meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
Certification in a content area is desirable.
