Job Description
The Civil Engineer will design and prepare engineering documents for land development and related infrastructure projects, with a strong focus on stormwater management, grading, utilities, and site design. This role combines hands-on technical design work with coordination across internal teams, external consultants, and public agencies. The position offers exposure to diverse projects, including K-12, light commercial, and industrial developments, and provides a clear path toward project management responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Design and prepare engineering documents for specific design components of land development and infrastructure projects.
Develop stormwater management designs, including Environmental Site Design (ESD) and structural stormwater solutions.
Prepare sediment and erosion control plans in compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
Design storm drain systems and perform associated hydraulic and hydrologic computations.
Complete water and sewer designs in accordance with local utility standards, including WSSC water and sewer design requirements.
Prepare grade establishment plans, ensuring appropriate grading, drainage, and constructability across project sites.
Develop right-of-way improvement plans, including roadway, streetscape, and utility improvements.
Create and refine maintenance of traffic plans to support safe and efficient construction phasing and traffic control.
Manage standard to routine design tasks, including running engineering reports and performing technical calculations.
Work independently on assigned tasks to deliver accurate, timely, and high-quality design outputs.
Supervise, coordinate, and review the work of Design Engineers and Technicians to ensure consistency, accuracy, and adherence to project standards.
Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members in civil design and software tools.
Coordinate project efforts with clients, regulatory agencies, internal departments, and external consultants.
Contribute to engineering reports, technical memoranda, and project documentation.
Support project engineering activities, including design iterations, quality checks, and responses to review comments.
Engage in site design, grading, drainage, and utility layout for K-12, light commercial, and industrial projects.
Participate in internal meetings and cross-office collaboration to align design efforts and project objectives.
Demonstrate initiative by taking ownership of tasks from day one and proactively identifying design issues and solutions.
Develop professional skills and experience with an eye toward future project management responsibilities.
Essential Skills
Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Civil Engineering.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in civil engineering, preferably with a focus on land development projects.
At least 3 years of hands-on experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D on land development, water resources, or transportation projects.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D for site design, grading, and utility layout.
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite for reports, calculations, and documentation.
Technical proficiency in roadway and street design, including alignment, grading, and associated improvements.
Strong skills in grading design for site development projects.
Experience in stormwater management design, including ESD and structural stormwater solutions.
Experience in erosion and sediment control design in accordance with applicable standards.
Experience in stormwater and drainage design, including storm drain layout and related computations.
Experience in water distribution system design, including preparation of water plans and profiles.
Experience in sanitary sewer design, including layout, grading, and hydraulic considerations.
Ability to run engineering reports and perform technical calculations accurately and efficiently.
Strong written communication skills for report writing and documentation.
Strong verbal communication skills for coordination with clients, agencies, and internal teams.
Detail-oriented approach with strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
Ability to work independently and generate expected results with minimal supervision.
Ability to supervise, coordinate, and review the work of Design Engineers and Technicians.
