The Role Peraton is seeking a skilled Voice and Cable Engineer to support the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) enterprise infrastructure program. In this role, you will serve as a subject matter expert responsible for the architecture, design, and engineering of structured voice and cabling systems across DOE facilities, while also providing technical oversight for network infrastructure projects. This position requires the application of independent engineering judgment to define cable specifications, design cabling schemas, solve complex infrastructure challenges, and ensure that all installations meet federal standards and future capacity requirements.
The Voice and Cable Engineer exercises discretion in evaluating site conditions, selecting optimal routing solutions, and making real-time technical decisions that impact enterprise network performance and reliability. This position is ideal for a technically proficient professional who combines hands-on expertise with engineering design and problem-solving capabilities in a mission-driven federal environment. Responsibilities Cabling Architecture, Design & Engineering
* Architect and design structured cabling solutions for DOE facilities, including pathway routing, cable plant topology, and capacity planning to support current and future network requirements.
* Define cable specifications and standards for enterprise deployments, evaluating and selecting appropriate media types (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, single-mode fiber, multi-mode fiber) based on performance requirements, distance limitations, and environmental factors.
* Develop cabling schemas and infrastructure blueprints, including logical and physical layer designs, to support data center, campus, and building-level connectivity.
* Exercise independent engineering judgment to assess site conditions, resolve design conflicts, and determine optimal installation approaches that balance performance, cost, and schedule constraints.
* Perform technical problem-solving for complex cabling challenges, including analysis of signal degradation, interference mitigation, and pathway obstructions that require creative engineering solutions.
* Pull, route, dress, and terminate copper (twisted pair) and fiber optic cabling in accordance with applicable standards and site-specific requirements.
* Terminate and test Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, and fiber optic cables (single-mode and multi-mode) including connectors, patch panels, and wall plates.
* Perform fiber splicing, polishing, and end-face inspection using industry-standard tools and equipment.
* Conduct cable testing and certification using tools such as Fluke DSX or similar cable analyzers; analyze test results, diagnose failures, and develop remediation strategies.
* Design and specify cable tray layouts, conduit pathways, J-hook configurations, and other cable management infrastructure based on site-specific engineering assessments.
* Coordinate with facilities, construction, network architects, and government stakeholders to plan and execute cabling projects; provide technical recommendations and engineering trade-off analyses to inform project decisions.
* Create and maintain engineering documentation including as-built drawings, cable schedules, design specifications, and labeling schemas in accordance with DOE standards.
* Conduct site surveys and feasibility assessments for new infrastructure projects; provide engineering recommendations on cabling approaches, materials, and labor requirements.
* Adhere to all site safety requirements, including working in raised floor environments, above ceiling spaces, and data center facilities. Qualifications Education Requirements Minimum of 0 years with BS/BA;
