Job Specific InformationRequired to work flexible hours and weekends as assigned, occasional overtime, must attend screening interview with Dept. School Safety & Security. Preference for bilingual English/Spanish candidates with knowledge of safety procedures, behavior management, investigative procedures, and excellent communication skills.
Summary DescriptionPositions in this class are assigned to the local school to assist the administration maintain a safe and secure learning environment for the school community. Under the general supervision of the security team leader, assists in screening visitor access to school facilities, maintaining student class attendance, and other responsibilities related to school security operations. Receives guidance and assistance from the security team leader on more difficult or unusual situations.
Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of procedures and practices for ensuring the safety and welfare of others.
- Knowledge of behavior management techniques.
- Knowledge of security practices and procedures.
- Investigative procedures knowledge desirable.
- Ability to acquire specific knowledge of MCPS policies on student attendance, suspension, involvement, and standards of student behavior.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff, and understand the role of each staff member in attendance, behavior, and building security.
- Ability to work harmoniously with staff and students and perform assigned tasks under team leader supervision.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
- Knowledge of and ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
Sufficient physical strength to intervene in fights and physically restrain persons; stamina to spend long periods of time walking and standing with security patrol duties; ability to patrol outdoors in inclement and extreme weather conditions.
Special RequirementsRequired to work flexible hours, including weekends, as assigned by the principal/security team leader to provide maximum security coverage. Required to occasionally work overtime. Required to wear the designated security uniforms.
Education, Training, and Experience- High School or GED diploma required;
Associate's degree preferred. - College coursework in criminology, law enforcement, or related fields.
- Experience in work involving the welfare and safety of students or others, preferably in an educational environment.
- Experience in investigation desirable.
- Experience in safety and security of persons and property, preferably as a police officer.
- Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Possession of a valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver’s license or equivalent.
- First aid and CPR certification.
