Job Summary
We are hiring a dedicated on‑site Shop Trailer Technician I in a set location within Cox Fleet. The role focuses on DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light repairs, and related duties on trailers and associated equipment. The Shop Trailer Technician I works under the guidance of the Shop Trailer Technician II and continually develops advanced mechanical skills.
Responsibilities- Always follow and comply with safe operating practices and procedures.
- Independently determine parts required for each job and coordinate with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist with cleanup at the end of each day.
- Apply knowledge from formal training or on‑the‑job experience to perform job tasks and evaluate technical information.
- Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs, provide assistance, and resolve problems.
- Manage concurrent assigned tasks effectively, prioritizing work and time allocations.
- Act with integrity, demonstrate honesty, and keep commitments while safeguarding confidential information.
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
- Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks.
- Document work according to company standards, upload pictures, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company devices or the Karmak application.
- Accurately complete DOT forms and all other required documentation in a timely fashion.
- Maintain a high level of productivity and operate within or close to most Standard Repair Times.
- Communicate with Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, retrieve purchase order numbers, and discuss RO findings.
- Perform all work in compliance with organizational safety, health and environmental policies, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA and DOT.
- Participate and complete all company‑required safety training.
- Maintain assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks and daily pre/post‑trip inspections.
- Perform minor adjustments and repairs on trailer equipment and systems such as brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, and steering systems.
- Adhere to company policies, processes, and procedures.
- High School Diploma/GED and up to 2 years’ experience in a related field.
- Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties.
- OEM training and certifications are preferred.
- Participate in and complete all company‑required training.
- This position follows regulations issued by the Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
- Candidate must successfully complete a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening and DOT physical prior to employment.
- A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical; if the card has four months or less remaining, a DOT physical will be required.
- Safe driver needed; 3‑year MVR review required; candidate must hold a valid state‑of‑residence driver’s license and maintain a Driver Qualification File.
- Required or to be obtained within 18 months: ASE T8 (PMI).
- Preferred: ASE 608/609.
- Knowledge of trailer parts and systems, including design, repair and maintenance.
- Ability to understand the implications of new information for current and future problem‑solving and decision‑making.
- Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand and walk for long periods; perform moderately heavy labor.
- Ability to exert oneself physically over long periods without tiring; perform repetitive tasks.
- Ability to judge relative distances and spatial relationships accurately.
- Ability to communicate information succinctly and organized; engage in effective two‑way communication with individuals and groups.
- Ability to determine the type of tools and equipment needed.
