Embedded Software Engineer - C/C++, Microprocessors & Hardware LocationGermantown, MD - Hybrid, 4 days onsite per week
Salary$125,000-$155,000; additional flexibility may be available for highly qualified senior candidates.

Our growing client is looking for a hands-on Embedded Software Engineer who enjoys working close to the hardware. This is not primarily an FPGA development role. The ideal candidate is an embedded software engineer who writes C/C++ for microcontrollers, microprocessors, soft processors, or similar hardware platforms and is comfortable working directly with boards in the lab.
The target is a mid-level engineer with approximately 4+ years of relevant experience, although stronger senior-level candidates will also be considered.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, debug, and test embedded software using C and C++.
- Develop software for microcontrollers, microprocessors, soft processors, and other hardware-based computing platforms.
- Work directly with engineering boards during initial bring-up, integration, testing, and debugging.
- Develop software that interfaces between low-level hardware and Linux-based host systems.
- Participate in hardware/software integration for PCIe-based devices and server platforms.
- Develop Linux kernel modules, drivers, and user-space Linux software as needed.
- Troubleshoot problems across embedded software, hardware, operating systems, and system interfaces.
- Work closely with hardware and FPGA engineers to integrate software with board-level functionality.
- Support lab testing using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and other electronic test equipment.
- Assist with manufacturing, validation, and system-level testing.
- Work hands-on with servers, lab equipment, boards, racks, and related hardware when necessary.
- Use AI-assisted development tools where they provide meaningful engineering leverage while maintaining ownership of code quality and correctness.
- Contribute to technical planning and product development within a small, collaborative engineering team.
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 4+ years of embedded software engineering experience preferred.
- Strong C and C++ programming experience in embedded environments.
- Experience programming microcontrollers, microprocessors, soft processors, or similar embedded computing platforms.
- Strong understanding of embedded systems and hardware/software interaction.
- Hands-on experience with board bring-up, board-level debugging, or hardware integration.
- Strong Linux experience.
- Experience developing software that communicates with hardware devices and host systems.
- Familiarity with Linux kernel modules, device drivers, or low-level Linux development is highly valuable.
- Python and/or Bash scripting experience is preferred.
- Experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and similar electronics lab equipment.
