Job SummaryThe Youth Services Assistant will play a key role in shaping the look, feel, and energy of our children’s area while also providing hands‑on support to library patrons. This position balances artistic and creative responsibilities—such as implementing monthly thematic decorations and designing promotional materials—with traditional youth services duties such as assisting with children’s programming, guiding patrons to resources, and shelving.
Duties and Responsibilities- This position is guaranteed 24 hours per week.
- Develop and implement monthly themed displays and decorations throughout the children’s department.
- Design visually appealing flyers, posters, and social media graphics using Canva.
- Collaborate with the Youth Services team to create engaging visual and thematic content for seasonal events
- Assist patrons in locating books, multimedia, and other resources.
- Use the LEAP system to create and manage library cards and patron accounts.
- Support programming efforts, including story times, craft sessions, and special events.
- Maintain organized and welcoming library spaces in the children’s department.
- Collaborate with team members on projects and program planning.
- Contribute ideas for innovative programs and community outreach.
- Perform tasks as assigned by the Youth Services Librarian.
- Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
- Perform other activities as assigned.
- H.S. Diploma or GED required,
- Experience in graphic design or visual arts required; familiarity with Canva preferred.
- Experience with children in a public setting preferred.
- Basic knowledge of library systems and procedures (I.e. experience with LEAP) is a plus but not required.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Creative thinker with the ability to implement imaginative, engaging displays and programs.
- Strong technology skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Words, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to work a schedule which will include weekend and evening work.
- Fast paced public library
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as the employee works in a library setting, using telephone and computer
- Ability to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
- The person in this position frequently communicates via telephone
