Position: Librarian (On-Site)

Job Summary

You and your team create amazing experiences for our library patrons. You foster teamwork and work cooperatively with others to deliver excellent service, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Creates a welcoming library environment and ensures positive, memorable experiences for all users.
  • Maintains open internal communication and strong working relationships with colleagues and supervisors on all relevant matters (building, staff, service, security).
  • Participate in the training and supervision of new volunteers.
  • Understands and performs duties of lower-level library classifications as needed.
  • Attend workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences for professional development.
  • Helps develop material and resources for staff professional development.
  • Under the Library Director's guidance, supports, plans, promotes, and executes in-house or virtual programs and outreach for adults.
  • Develop partnerships and outreach opportunities with external organizations and groups in order to increase the use of library resources and services.
  • Performs such specialized functions as serving target population groups, creating, developing and implementing specific programs and services, organizing and maintaining special collections.
  • Provides prompt and courteous assistance to library users in person, at service desks, via phone, virtually, and through electronic options.
  • Offers reference and reader's advisory services.
  • Educates community members on library resources and technology and assists with basic computer and e-reader questions.
  • Explains and demonstrates how to use library catalogs, print and media collections, databases, and the internet.
  • Keeps current with new library materials and promotes their use through book talks, displays, reading lists, posters, social media, and other tools.
  • Assists with the maintenance, and arrangement of collections, including shelf-reading, shelving, weeding, and other tasks.
  • Maintains and orders new material for the library's Adult Ecollection.
  • Supports and upholds library policies and the Library Code of Conduct.
  • Supports the daily operations of the adult services department and is cross trained in other areas.
  • Utilizes the integrated library system, online databases, and the internet; may assist with basic maintenance of library equipment, software, or hardware.
  • Collects, maintains, and reports statistical data for the Library Director.
  • Collaborates with staff to support the library's social media presence and website content related to Adult Services.
  • Adheres to all applicable Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
  • Maintains regular and consistent work attendance.
  • Works effectively with culturally diverse populations.
  • Schedules and reviews the performance volunteers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
  • College degree in Library Science or a closely related field; MLS or equivalent required.
  • 2+ years of progressively responsible library managerial experience and/or administrative functions of a library, or equivalent knowledge preferred.
  • 2+ years supervisory experience preferred.

  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Good organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both professional and nonprofessional, co-workers, management personnel, and the public.
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and presentation abilities.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand sensitive relationships and underlying politics in client interactions.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule which may include some weekend and evening work.
Work Environment
  • Fast paced public library.
  • Self-starter with ability to work in a self-directed environment with minimal guidance.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
