Job Summary
At Germantown Community Library, we believe in fostering curiosity, creativity, and a lifelong love of learning in children and families. Our Youth Services Department is committed to providing engaging, inspiring, and educational experiences focused towards our youngest patrons and as such we are seeking a creative, imaginative, initiative-oriented, and organized individual to join our team as a Youth Services Assistant .
The Youth Services Assistant plays a key role in shaping the look, feel, and energy of our children’s area while also providing hands‑on support to library patrons. This position balances social media responsibilities—such as content creation, community engagement, and advertising duties with traditional Youth Services tasks such as assisting with children’s programming, guiding patrons to resources, and shelving.
- Prepare crafts, activities, and other materials for all children's programs.
- Assist Youth Services staff and guest presenters with daily programs and activities.
- Help set up and clean up program spaces and materials.
- Engage with children and families during programs in a welcoming, enthusiastic, and age-appropriate manner.
- Participate in storytelling, crafts, games, music, movement activities, and additional children's programming.
- Develop creative ideas for future children's programs and, as experience is gained, have opportunities to plan and lead programs independently.
- Help create a fun, welcoming environment where children can explore, learn, create, and enjoy the library.
- Assist patrons in locating books, multimedia, and other resources.
- Use the LEAP system to create and manage library cards and patron accounts.
- Maintain organized and welcoming library spaces in the children’s department.
- Contribute ideas for innovative programs and community outreach.
- Know and understand the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library.
- Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records.
- Help with basic library tasks and other duties as assigned.
- H.S. Diploma or GED required,
- 1
-2 year library experience preferred - 1 - 2 years customer service experience preferred
- Some experience working with children
- Basic knowledge of library systems and procedures (I.e. experience with LEAP) is a plus but not required.
- Experience with Canva preferred
- Experience with children in a public setting/customer service is preferred.
- Experience with digital resources preferred (Libby, Kanapy, etc.)
- Excellent listening and communication abilities.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Strong technology skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Words, Excel, etc.)
- Ability to work a schedule which will include weekend and evening work.
- Fast paced public library
- The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate as the employee works in a library setting, using telephone and computer
- Ability to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.
