The Infection Preventionist (IP) is responsible for coordinating, overseeing, and being accountable for the Infection Prevention and Control Program at the Community. This role ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations while promoting resident safety, staff education, and positive quality outcomes.
The Infection Preventionist must be a professionally trained Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or Registered Nurse (RN) with extensive knowledge of medical technology, microbiology, and epidemiology.
Essential Functions- Coordinate, develop, implement, manage, and evaluate the Infection Prevention and Control Program in accordance with CDC, CMS, TDH, and other applicable public health guidelines
- Oversee and manage the Antibiotic Stewardship Program, including monitoring antibiotic use and resistance patterns
- Maintain current knowledge of national, state, and local infection prevention regulations and best practices
- Interpret and analyze clinical and laboratory data to identify infection trends, outbreaks, and risks
- Conduct ongoing infection surveillance, investigations, and required reporting
- Develop and implement corrective actions related to infection control concerns
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention policies and procedures across all departments
- Educate, train, and support staff to ensure infection prevention competencies are met and maintained
- Ensure completion of required infection prevention training, including:
- Infection Prevention and Control Program (IPCP) overview
- Infection surveillance and outbreak management
- Standard and transmission-based precautions
- Wound care and resident care practices
- Water management
- Linen handling and management
- Prevention of respiratory infections
- Tuberculosis (TB) prevention
- Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI)
- Care transitions
- Participate in the Quality Assessment and Assurance (QAA) Committee
- Prepare and present routine and as-needed reports on infection prevention activities and outcomes
- Collaborate with leadership, clinical staff, and external agencies
- Assist with survey preparedness and regulatory response related to infection prevention
- Serve as a resource for infection prevention questions and concerns
- Current, active Tennessee LPN or RN license in good standing
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience as an LPN or RN
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience in a long-term care setting
- Clinical experience in a skilled nursing environment preferred
- Strong knowledge of infection prevention and control practices, microbiology, epidemiology, and medical technology
- Ability to interpret clinical and laboratory data
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to educate and influence staff at all levels
- Proficiency with basic computer applications and electronic health records
- Awareness of and sensitivity to the needs of geriatric residents strongly preferred
