The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent law enforcement agency dedicated to maintaining the safety and security of the Texas juvenile justice system. Its statutory responsibilities include investigating criminal allegations involving TJJD juveniles, employees, facilities, contractors, volunteers or programs. OIG inspectors general oversee criminal investigations and have all the powers granted to peace officers under Texas law. They also provide security at gatehouses, control the ingress and egress of all personnel and vehicles, detect and intercept contraband, and operate the 24‑hour Incident Reporting Center (IRC).
Criminal analysts compile and submit reports regarding investigations and OIG operations to the TJJD board, legislature, and other state agencies. They monitor compliance with the TJJD Use of Force Plan.
Responsible for investigative law enforcement work as a commissioned peace officer. Planning, organizing, and conducting investigations on agency property or involving agency interests may include canine partners to aid in detecting, intercepting, and investigating contraband. The role requires working in excess of 40 hours per week, being on call, responding within 60 minutes of a designated location, and extensive statewide travel.
Oversees, obtains, and executes warrants; assists other agencies; conducts undercover investigations; performs arrests and facility security duties, including escapee pursuit.
Oversees evidence, prepares comprehensive reports, submits criminal cases for prosecution, and reports abuse, neglect, and exploitation to agency leadership for discipline.
Documents and oversees investigative activity, maintains records of cases, evidence, contraband, and property per applicable laws and retention policies.
Conducts searches and inspections of premises, persons, and vehicles; records training and activities; completes monthly activity reports.
Coordinates with staff to meet objectives, shares information, identifies operational concerns and trends, and recommends improvements.
Collects and analyzes reports of serious injury, escape, youth‑on‑youth assaults, attempted suicide; issues reports on non‑compliance and technical assistance needs. May be assigned a computer forensic investigator.
