General Description

Performs advanced (senior‑level) heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) mechanic work. Employees may perform the full range of work and may provide guidance to other HVAC mechanics and/or coordinate or oversee HVAC projects. Work involves coordinating the installation, repairs, and overhaul of HVAC equipment and systems based on work orders and preventive maintenance activities.

Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per work week.

Observes and performs periodic inspections to ensure efficiency of HVAC systems.

Checks performance of thermostats, automatic controls, and pressure gauges.

Clears, services, oils, and adjusts equipment; tightens fittings; aligns and repacks pumps; replaces belts; and changes and cleans filters.

Replaces defective compressors, cleans and recharges systems, and repairs motors and thermostats.

Coordinates parts and material requirements with supply room or warehouse.

Overhauls and services HVAC equipment and air compressors and pumps associated with HVAC equipment and systems.

Repairs and replaces worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps.

Repairs or adjusts valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings.

Tests equipment for refrigerant leak, charging, and metering device issues.

Removes and installs motors, thermostats, and humidistats.

Adjusts expansion valves and adds gas to refrigeration units.

Checks gauges and performs preventive maintenance work.

Maintains records and prepares reports on repairs and service to equipment.

Maintains, tests, and repairs backup generators and power supply systems.

Monitors energy consumption of HVAC systems and makes recommendations for increased energy efficiency in operations. Sets up and installs complex HVAC electrical components.

Provides on‑the‑job training to ensure proper procedures and policies are followed.

Assists in planning, scheduling, and supervising all assigned maintenance work to ensure completion according to TJJD policy.

May act in the capacity of the Maintenance Manager in his/her absence.

Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:

  • Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.

Will be required to travel up to 50% of the time.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent. Four (4) years of wage‑earning experience in HVAC work.

  • Vocational certification or special training in the HVAC trade.
  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) universal certification for proper refrigerant handling techniques.
Experience and Education Substitutions
  • One year of appropriate experience may substitute for one year of college (30 course hours) on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Completed course hours of undergraduate study may substitute for up to four years of experience on a basis of 30 course hours for one year of experience.
  • Completed course hours of graduate study may substitute for up to two years of experience on a basis of 12 graduate course hours for one year of experience.
  • Experience requirements may be satisfied by the prorated part‑time equivalent.
