Overview

Provides supervision and direct care for youth in a residential correctional facility. Works to help youth progress in learning and applying methods to identify and manage reactions to stress and trauma and respond in more socially appropriate ways. Maintains safety through appropriate intervention methods and supports youth in learning and correcting behavior. Facilitates unit programming, scheduling, and safety protocols. Utilizes Texas Model interventions and other trained interventions to help youth improve safety, communication, and emotion regulation.

Functions
  • Engages in competency-based training in the techniques and capabilities needed to coach youth under the Texas Model of trauma-informed corrections.
  • Holds youth accountable in ways that fit the level of behavior, helping youth learn socially acceptable responses.
  • Uses good judgment to determine when safety is at risk and higher levels of intervention are required.
  • Helps youth identify responses to stress, fear, and other triggers and works with youth to increase emotional self-regulation skills.
  • Models and practices appropriate self-regulation skills, remaining calm during times of stress and crisis.
  • Gains basic knowledge of each youth’s treatment plan and provides support in learning skills and applying Texas Model and clinical interventions needed to meet goals.
  • Coaches youth on resolving conflicts and facilitates repairs with other youth and staff as appropriate.
  • Participates in the Youth Service Team and provides input into each youth’s treatment plan; collaborates as a reliable team member to support the facility.
  • Provides a predictable schedule for youth with clear warnings and prompts for movements and transitions; adjusts as needed while maintaining transparency.
  • Implements and monitors youth act and related activities in accordance with facility policies.
General Description and Work Context

Works to maintain safe environments and employs security measures when youth, staff, or others are in danger. Interacts with youth in ways that balance appropriate structure with an understanding of brain development and trauma. Maintains healthy boundaries and recognizes progress and good choices made by youth. Work involves facilitating youth rehabilitation, supervising youth, and coaching their personal development in line with individualized treatment plans.

May be assigned to an off-site or on-call shift and may require travel.

Career Ladder and Training Requirements
  • Career Ladder Promotion Opportunity:
    This position is in the TJJD career ladder for Juvenile Correctional Officers. The working title is Juvenile Correctional Officer (JCO). Salary adjustments occur upon meeting eligibility criteria per agency policy (PRS.
    15.08) until the top level is reached.
  • Pre-Service Training Academy Requirement:
    Newly hired or rehired JCOs separated more than 18 months must complete pre-service training and on-the-job training on a full-time basis. JCOs returning within 18 months of separation are placed in full-time status on the date of employment.
  • Levels of Work: JCO II, III, IV with increasing levels of responsibility and independent judgment.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Minimum Qualifications as listed by the agency, including ability to pass a Criminal Background Check and any other requirements listed under Minimum Qualifications.
