Role DescriptionThe Universal Operator is a full-time, on-site role based in Phoenix, AZ, responsible for safely operating a variety of heavy equipment and machinery used in civil and heavy civil construction projects. Day-to-day responsibilities include operating equipment such as loaders, backhoes, excavators, rollers, and other paving and grading machinery to support site preparation, roadwork, and infrastructure construction. The role involves performing basic equipment inspections, routine maintenance checks, and reporting mechanical issues to supervisors or maintenance personnel.
The Universal Operator will follow project plans and directions from forepersons, adhere to safety procedures and traffic control guidelines, and support crew members with general labor tasks as needed. This position requires working outdoors in varying weather conditions and collaborating closely with team members to meet project schedules and quality standards.
- Ability to safely operate multiple types of heavy equipment (e.g., loaders, excavators, rollers, backhoes, skid steers) on civil and heavy civil construction sites.
- Experience with basic equipment inspections, preventive maintenance checks, and reporting or addressing minor mechanical issues.
- Knowledge of construction site safety practices, traffic control procedures, and compliance with company and regulatory safety standards.
- Capability to read or follow basic construction plans, grade stakes, and instructions from supervisors to complete assigned tasks accurately.
- Physical ability to perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including lifting, standing, walking on uneven surfaces, and working around heavy machinery.
- Strong teamwork, communication, and reliability, with a focus on punctuality and professional conduct on-site.
- Prior experience in civil or heavy civil construction, paving, or roadwork is preferred.
- Valid driver’s license and a clean driving record; eligibility to operate company vehicles and equipment as required.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime or weekends, based on project needs.
