Build your future by gaining real-world experience on active heavy civil construction projects.
The Hunter Contracting Co. Project Engineer Internship Program is a structured 13-week summer internship designed to provide hands-on experience working alongside our project teams in the field. As an intern, you'll be immersed in the day-to-day operations of active construction projects, learning directly from experienced project managers, project engineers, superintendents, and field professionals.

Throughout The Program, You’ll
  • Work alongside a dedicated project team on active construction projects.
  • Receive mentorship from experienced construction professionals.
  • Assist with project documentation, scheduling, quality control, subcontractor coordination, and project execution.
  • Gain exposure to estimating, business development, safety, and other key areas that support successful project delivery.
  • Participate in jobsite tours, professional development opportunities, and other events.
  • Present your internship experience and key takeaways to Hunter leadership at the conclusion of the program.

This internship is designed to provide meaningful, hands-on experience that prepares you for a successful career in heavy civil construction while allowing you to make valuable contributions to real projects from day one.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist in maintaining and tracking the lookahead schedule.
  • Visits job sites and obtains photographs to incorporate with plans.
  • Reviews all project plans, specifications, and estimates.
  • Become familiar with project requirements and scope.
  • Research quantity discrepancies and make appropriate corrections.
  • Tracks job costs in Spectrum.
  • Assists with project estimating, including quantity take-offs, determining crew type, and duration of project.
  • Recommends alternative methods to keep costs on target.
  • Assist in processing change orders and RFIs.
  • Creates letters, correspondence, and emails.
  • Picks up plans and delivers equipment to and from job sites.
  • Prepares Quality Control reports.
  • Obtains approvals from upper management on necessary documents.
  • Interfaces with vendors to obtain quotes and arrange delivery times for materials.
  • Maintains constant communication with field and office individuals on project status.
  • Adheres to all Hunter Contracting Co. safety policies, procedures, and instructions from management.
  • Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned.

  • Looks at drawings or pictures and understands how they look at solid objects.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans.
  • Follows oral and written directions.
  • Works within precise standards of accuracy.
  • Demonstrates an interest in technical construction background.
  • Has focus encompassing both a strategic vision and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and adjusts quickly to shifting priorities, meets deadlines, exercises good judgment, and handles high pressure situations.
  • Approaches work in a meticulous, thorough, and detailed manner.
  • Ability to work effectively with all divisions and/or departments and with the public.
  • Ability to prepare clear, sound, accurate, and informative reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
  • Can be trusted to maintain confidentiality and adhere to company values.

Education & Work Experience Requirements
  • High School Diploma; and
  • Minimum two (2) Years' College Education; AND
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience
