Assistant Superintendent - Teaching and Learning
Purpose Statement
Under the general supervision of the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning develops, implements, directs, supervises, and coordinates the district's comprehensive curriculum and instructional programs in alignment with district goals, strategic priorities, and applicable laws. Serving as a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet, this position provides innovative and visionary leadership for the district's Pre-K12 instructional program with a strong emphasis on content standards, research-based instructional practices, and measurable student achievement.
The Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning provides executive oversight of the District Continuous Improvement Planning (DCIP) process, ensuring alignment between district strategy, school improvement efforts, instructional programming, and data-driven decision making. This role leads the Teaching and Learning Division in a fully collaborative, cohesive, and integrated manner, ensuring that curriculum, assessment, professional development, special education, CTE, Federal Programs and other support programs operate as a unified system focused on improving outcomes for all students.
This position oversees the development of systems that increase the effective collection, analysis, and use of data at all levels of the organization and leads the development of effective teaching, learning, and assessment practices within the framework of the district's strategic priorities.
Essential Functions
* Supervises and evaluates leaders and staff in Curriculum, Assessment, CTE, Professional Development, Adult Education, Federal Programs, and Special Education, ensuring alignment and cohesion across all departments.
* Provides executive leadership and oversight of the District Continuous Improvement Planning (CIP) process, ensuring alignment between district strategy, school improvement plans, instructional priorities, and measurable student outcomes.
* Leads the Teaching and Learning Division as a fully collaborative, integrated team focused on shared goals, unified systems, and collective accountability for student achievement.
* Develops, implements, and oversees the district's curriculum and instructional programs in accordance with district goals, objectives, and applicable laws.
* Develops collaborative relationships with leaders at the Arizona Department of Education to ensure compliance and alignment of educational programming.
* Directs the district curriculum development and revision process in accordance with the district's curriculum cycle and state and national standards.
* Plans and coordinates a comprehensive professional development program that promotes continuous professional growth and improved student learning.
* Directs the selection and adoption of instructional materials, textbooks, digital resources, and software.
* Interprets, evaluates, and analyzes student assessment and program evaluation results to improve instruction and student achievement.
* Oversees the development and implementation of effective assessment systems and data collection processes that establish baseline measures and track longitudinal trends.
* Evaluates and provides professional learning for school principals and instructional leaders.
* Works with administrators, principals, and teachers to implement programs, practices, and technologies that support students of differing abilities and interests in achieving high standards.
* Oversees curriculum-driven partnerships with stakeholders including parents, teachers, principals, higher education, business leaders, policymakers, and professional associations.
* Ensures curriculum, instructional services, and assessments meet the needs of students in regular education, special education, English learner programs, gifted programs, CTE, and adult education.
* Participates in analysis and recommendations derived from district testing programs.
* Communicates current research, trends, and innovations in curriculum and instruction to improve student achievement.
* Serves as a resource to central administrative staff in the development and implementation of administrative practices, policies, and procedures.
* Drives the continuous development of accountable academic systems that strengthen the effective collection, analysis, and use of data throughout the district.
