This Education Assistant is an Ameri Corps position. With its world renown geologic and cultural history, Grand Canyon National Park’s outdoor classroom can provide real‑world examples of classroom concepts. Additionally, the education program is embarking on a strategic plan to focus programming on topics such as rapidly changing environmental conditions, the Colorado River aridification, traditional ecological knowledge, and dark skies. The participant will be integral in helping revise education programming to address these focal areas.
DESCRIPTIONOF DUTIES
SIPs will facilitate engaging distance learning programs with K‑12 classes. Group sizes may range from 20 students to webinar style programming with 100+ students. The participant will learn to facilitate student‑centered programs to support real‑world examples of science, history, and social studies curriculum concepts. The participant will support student exploration of concepts through distance learning programs and field trips. In the spring, the participant will shadow and co‑teach field trips with school groups of up to 50 K‑12 students.
The participant will also assist with public programming to engage junior rangers and their families.
The participant will develop engaging activities and discussion questions for distance learning programs on the strategic plan focal areas. The participant will also develop multigenerational public programming to engage junior rangers and their families during spring break season (March and April). The participant will also develop facilitator guides for family programming so that future staff can implement the program. The participant will also produce reflective assessments after co‑teaching with permanent lead education specialist during spring field trips.
QUALIFICATIONS- United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
- Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of secondary school to enroll as an Ameri Corps participant and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award.
- Prior to starting the position, agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check for the employer of record, Conservation Legacy, and a separate government security background check for the host site.
- The applicant must be available to participate for the entire 26 Weeks in order to be considered and participate.
