Purpose Statement

The job of Paraprofessional Technician is to assist in the supervision and instruction of mildly to moderately disabled special needs students under the supervision of a certificated teacher; observe and document student progress; implement instructional plans; and provide for special health care needs.

Essential Functions
  • Assists special education students one on one with classroom and daily living skills (e.g., toileting, diapering) to create a positive plan of action and address behavior issues.
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the teacher for all special education students’ participation.
  • Confers with teachers and/or therapists as appropriate for student needs and direction.
  • Supports instructional activities assigned by a teacher or therapist for individuals or small groups to meet learning goals described by an IEP or district benchmarks.
  • Implements behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior needs.
  • Provides instructional materials as needed under the direction of a certified teacher or therapist.
  • Monitors special education students in lunch, playground, classroom, field trips, etc., to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates as a provider in recording, reporting, and gathering data for the Direct Service Claiming (DSC) program.
  • Performs record keeping of daily data on instruction and/or behavior and clerical functions.
  • Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.

Experience, Education, and Certifications
  • Job-related experience is desired.
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Paraprofessionals at a Title I campus must have: an Associate degree; or AA Degree; or 60 college credits; or evidence of passing the Para Pro Assessment Test.
