Job Description

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support HUSD Vision, Mission and Goals.
  • Instruct, within close proximity to the teacher, individual students or small groups of students to reinforce material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  • Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, lunch periods and field trips.
  • Alert the teacher to any problem or special information about a student.
  • Implement, under direction, behavioral plans developed by a team consisting of parents and school personnel to assist students in modifying behaviors that conflict with a positive academic and social environment.
  • Work with special needs students across all instructional settings, including special education classrooms, general education classrooms, recess and lunch.
  • Remove a student from the classroom if the student needs a break and provide other activities to redirect behavior.
  • If circumstances require, restrain a student to prevent injury to self or others using CPI strategies (training provided).
  • Assist students requiring support in addressing personal care/activities of daily living such as feeding, toileting, diapering, positioning/transferring, and safety monitoring, with appropriate training.
  • Assist students with various physical, emotional and educational needs, adhering to guidelines of the student I.E.P, documenting activities of daily living for Medicaid reimbursement.
  • Participate in meetings and in‑service training as required to share information and improve knowledge and skills beneficial to classroom assistance.
  • Safeguard and maintain confidentiality of student information, even after employment ends.
  • Perform all duties safely and prudently as directed by supervisors, including related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma.
  • Current CPR and First Aid cards (no online classes).
  • Capable of working with children one‑on‑one and in groups.
  • Ability to work with a variety of students with disabilities, including emotional, autistic, mildly mentally disabled and non‑verbal students.
  • Ability to relate to students and teachers positively and build a relationship of trust.
  • Skills and ability to perform the functions of the job, including instruction, computer use, basic academic matters, problem solving and managing assignments.
  • Ability to pass background and reference checks as stipulated by district standards.
  • Valid IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card.
  • Maintain CPI certification (training available upon hire).
PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is regularly required to perform the following duties:

  • Frequent communication with students and staff, exchanging accurate information.
  • Frequent interaction with students by bending body downward and forward, using lower extremities and back muscles; bending legs at the knee to rest on knees or sitting on the floor and resuming upright position.
  • Move about on foot and remain upright while supervising students.
  • Raise or lower an object ranging from 25–50 lbs.
  • Exert force on an object so that it moves away from or towards the force.
  • Ascend and descend small ladders with agility.
  • Have visual acuity to perform activities with students.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT

Full‑time position – 10 months, Monday‑Friday, 35 hours per week.

SALARY CLASSIFICATION

Appropriate salary placement on the Classified Hourly Salary Schedule.

EVALUATION

Performance evaluated by the Site Administrator and according to district policy.
