Pharmacy Technician
LOCATIONDavis-Monthan Air Force Base - Tucson, AZ 85707
HOURSMonday through Friday - 9 hour shifts including 1 hour unpaid meal breaks between the hours of 6am to 6pm.
QUALIFICATIONS- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Graduation from a Pharmacy Technician program accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP). This includes formal programs such as military, technical, hospital or retail-based programs.
- Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
- A minimum of 1 year of full-time experience within the last 3 years in a retail/outpatient pharmacy setting.
- Possess current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification.
- Ability to type at a rate of 25 words per minute.
- Working knowledge of pharmacy administration, information systems, practice standards, pharmacology, dispensing, pharmaceutical calculations, medical supply procedures, manuals and reference books, safety and health hazards and professional conduct.
- Complete appropriate continuing medical education (CME). Twenty hours of CME are required every two years to maintain PTCB certification.
- Keep informed of current trends and developments in pharmaceutical care.
- Normal color vision.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds as defined in Air Force Instruction (AFI) 48-123, Medical Examination and Medical Standards.
- Ability to speak clearly and distinctly without speech impediment.
- Comply and perform tasks in accordance with Medical Group Instructions (MDGIs) and Pharmacy Operating Instructions (OIs).
- Interpret prescriptions for appropriateness, to include content, dosage, completeness, compatibility and conformity with established guidelines.
- Confer with prescribers and patients on questions required for proper prescription filling and dispensing.
- Prepare, package, and label prescriptions and drug orders as ordered by proper authorities and instruct patients on proper medication use.
- Recognize typical occurrences such as color, chemical or consistency changes in medications and report any problems to a pharmacist or military technician.
- Give general information regarding drug interactions and side effects.
- Operate Pharm Assist, the automated dispensing system, the CHCS software program as well as the Audio Care telephone refill system.
- Maintain and clean the automated dispensing units.
- Answer phone calls and field questions.
- Assist in stocking pharmacy shelves as needed, as well as performing general pharmacy cleaning.
- Display courtesy and sensitivity when communicating with patients, family members and staff personnel.
- Maintain professional working relationship and open lines of communication with staff, supervisor and other sections in the clinic.
- Confer with clinic and pharmacy staff on drug storage and expiration dates as well as filling out documentation for returning expired medications.
- Maintain MTF established standards of practice and service to include assisting in meeting customer satisfaction goals.
- Fill at least 25 new prescriptions per hour and/or 30 refills per hour; a maximum of 1 Category C error (those that reach the patient) allowed per technician per month. Completed prescriptions are subject to internal pharmacy quality control checks.
Job responsibilities are subject to change to meet Military Treatment Facility requirements. Additional immunization record, security and background check requirements are also considered as qualifying criteria.
