Lead Phlebotomist – Department:
Procurement-Gateway – Shift: Day (Monday-Thursday 9am-7:30pm, rotating holidays and weekends as needed).
Performs all technical and administrative work within the assigned location/section at an advanced level of competency and efficiency. The leader is a resource for solving complex testing problems, ensuring quality improvement, regulatory compliance, and providing shift supervision.
Core Responsibilities- Provides daily operational oversight for the shift, including schedule determination and workflow management. Provides technical and procedural support to bench level positions.
- Focuses on quality by reviewing records, ensuring QA/QC procedures and instrumentation maintenance meet accrediting standards, and supports management during inspections.
- Participates in financial monitoring, tracks supply usage, supports waste and expense reduction programs, and assists in controlling the section budget.
- Manages personnel, including hiring, training, coaching, retention, and functional competency assessment.
- Acts as a resource and liaison within multidisciplinary teams, interacting with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to address result or quality inquiries.
- At least 18 years old.
- High school graduate or equivalent GED.
- One year of experience in an SQL/LSA clinical laboratory environment, or two years of equivalent leadership/training experience, or an associate’s degree in Allied Health or related field.
- Proficient reading, writing, math, and oral communication skills in English.
- Good organizational skills and basic knowledge of departmental resources; knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- Deep knowledge of instrumentation and procedures used in the section; working knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Strong leadership, human relations, and communication skills, with exceptional customer service orientation and advanced computer skills for Laboratory Information Systems, Hospital Information Systems, and other software.
- Demonstrated behaviors consistent with Laboratory Sciences of Arizona values.
- National phlebotomy certification.
- Previous management experience or participation in management training programs.
- Bilingual in Spanish/English.
- Additional related education and/or experience, and knowledge of medical terminology.
