Responsibilities

The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and helps with patient follow‑up and rehabilitation.

The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medication, checking dosages, starting and discontinuing IV lines, administering therapies and treatments, observing the patient, recording observations, and consulting with physicians and other clinicians. The RN teaches patients and families how to manage illnesses or injuries, explains post‑treatment and home care needs, diet, nutrition, exercise programs, and self‑administration of medication and therapy.

The RN provides direction to LPNs and aides, delegates when appropriate, supports clinical knowledge, participates in precepting new hires, continues to enhance knowledge, and works to promote a healthy work environment. Nursing practice is theory based, evidence‑based with a Shared Governance model.

Essential Functions
  • Collect health data systematically to prioritize based on patient condition.
  • Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and develop, implement, evaluate, and revise patient plans of care.
  • Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient’s health problems.
  • Develop plans of care that are family‑centered and evidence‑based.
  • Implement interventions, initiate treatments and medications, and perform emergency measures based on standing orders.
  • Provide nursing care addressing physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs.
  • Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes and document all data.
  • Evaluate nursing practice against professional standards, maintain current knowledge.
  • Apply ethical principles in all aspects of practice.
  • Collaborate with team members, peers, and professionals for development.
  • Assist multidisciplinary plan of care implementation and evaluation.
  • Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care.
  • Facilitate changes in practice using evidence‑based approaches.
  • Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost in planning and delivering care.
Education
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) – Preferred
  • All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5 or more years of RN experience – Required
  • Associate’s Degree or Diploma in Nursing – Required (additional stroke care addendum needed if applicable)
  • Other graduate degree from an accredited NLN/CCNE institution – Required
Experience
  • Travelers – minimum assignment of 13 weeks in full time status – Required
  • 2 years RN experience – Required
Licenses and Certifications
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – Required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification in BLS training course C and unit‑specific certification as required by specialty area – Required
  • Registered Nurse (RN) State and/or Compact State licensure in Arizona upon hire – Required
  • National certification for unit‑specific patient population – Preferred
