Responsibilities

The RN’s practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nurse and Code of Ethics. Responsibilities include recording patient medical histories, performing diagnostic tests, operating medical equipment, administering treatments and medications, and contributing to patient care plans. The RN provides education to patients and families, oversees nursing aides, and supports staff and student development. The RN is involved in continuous learning to enhance nursing practice and patient outcomes.

Functions
  • Collect health data systematically and prioritize gathering based on the patient’s condition.
  • Analyze assessment data to determine nursing diagnoses and develop, evaluate, and revise individualized, family‑centered, evidence‑based care plans.
  • Implement interventions, including initiating treatments, administering medications, and performing emergency measures following standing orders.
  • Provide care that meets physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs using a family‑centered approach.
  • Document observations, interventions, and outcomes in a retrievable form and evaluate care effectiveness to improve patient outcomes and cost‑effective quality care.
  • Continuously evaluate nursing practice against professional standards, statutes, regulations, and departmental policies, maintaining current knowledge.
  • Integrate ethical principles into all aspects of practice and enhance understanding of cultural diversity.
  • Collaborate with colleagues for professional development, peer support, and participation in preceptor and mentor programs.
  • Work with multidisciplinary teams to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care delivery.
  • Develop and evaluate evidence‑based care standards, identify necessary practice changes, and facilitate adoption and adaptation of new approaches.
  • Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost when planning and delivering patient care, utilizing resources efficiently.
Education
  • Diploma or ADN:
    Complete a BSN within 60 months of hire OR have 5+ years of RN experience (direct or indirect care) at hire.
    Required
  • Associate or Diploma in Nursing:
    Staff with direct responsibility for stroke patient care must meet additional stroke‑specific education requirements before starting.
    Required
  • BSN:
    Preferred
Experience
  • Med‑Surg or acute specialty setting >10 months.
    Required
  • 1 year RN experience for all float positions.
    Required
License and Certifications
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, including unit‑specific certification as required.
    Required
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Arizona (state or compact).
    Required
  • National certification for unit‑specific patient populations (preferred).
