Job Summary:

The RN's practice is guided by the ANA Standard for Professional Nursing and Code of Ethics. The RN has knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices, concepts, and procedures as applied to the care of the patient population served. The RN records patients’ medical history and symptoms, helps perform diagnostic tests and analyze results, operates medical equipment, administers treatment and medications, and assists with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.

The RN establishes a care plan or contributes to an existing plan. The plan may include activities such as administering medication, careful dosage checks, IV line management, therapies, observation, and consultation with physicians and other clinicians. The RN teaches patients and families to manage illnesses, explain post-treatment and home care, diet, nutrition, exercise, and medication self‑administration. The RN leads licensed practical nurses and nursing aides, delegates appropriately, and supports clinical skill development.

The RN precepts new hire staff and students, assists them in competency tasks, and continually enhances knowledge in nursing management. The RN may continue to improve patient care.

• Possess the knowledge of how to collect health data systematically, prioritize it based on the patient’s immediate condition or needs, and involve the family.
• Analyze assessment data to determine diagnoses and use nursing diagnosis to develop, implement, evaluate, and revise a family‑centered, developmentally and age‑appropriate, culturally relevant plan of care.
• Identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient and their specific health problems.
• Develop plans of care individualized to the patient’s condition, reflecting evidence‑based practice and ensuring continuity of care.
• Implement interventions, initiate treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures using standing orders, policies, and procedures.
• Provide nursing care that meets the physical, emotional, spiritual, and social‑cultural needs of the patient and family using a family‑centered approach.
• Evaluate patient progress toward outcomes, document observations, interventions, and monitoring data in a retrievable form.
• Provide ongoing evaluation of care plan quality and effectiveness to maintain and enhance patient outcomes, ensuring cost‑effective, high‑quality care.
• Evaluate nursing practice relative to professional standards, statutes, system and department policies, maintaining current knowledge in nursing practice.
• Systematically evaluate the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice.
• Integrate ethical principles, enhance knowledge of culture and diversity needs for specific populations.
• Collaborate in nursing professional development at institutional, local, regional, and state levels.
• Interact and contribute to peers’ and health‑care providers’ professional development through role‑modeling, fostering relationships, and participating in preceptor or mentor programs.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members in assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of patient care delivery.
• Collaborate with patient, family, and health‑care providers to provide patient care.
• Develop and evaluate evidence‑based standards of care, identify necessary changes, and facilitate adoption and adaptation.
• Participate in evidence‑based research to identify strategies for improving nursing practice and patient outcomes, supporting research integration into practice.
• Consider safety, effectiveness, and cost factors in planning and delivering patient care using all resources efficiently.

• Other / Certificate:
  All Diploma and ADN hires must complete a BSN within 60 months of hire or have 5+ years of RN experience (direct or indirect) at the time of hire.
• Associates or Diploma in Nursing. Staff with direct responsibility for stroke patient care must refer to the stroke‑specific education addendum – PRIOR TO START.
• Bachelors in nursing (BSN) – Preferred.

• Other > 10 months med‑surg or acute specialty setting – Required.
• 1 year RN experience for all Float Positions – Required.

• Basic Life Support (BLS) – Certification:
  Completion of a BLS training course and unit‑specific certification required by specialty area DOP.
• Registered Nurse (RN) – State or Compact state licensure as a registered nurse in Arizona – Upon Hire.
• National certification for unit‑specific patient population – Preferred.
