Job Summary

Combo Clerks are crucial in in‑store operations, often being customers' final point of contact. They are responsible for accurately processing various forms of payment for store merchandise, reconciling a cash drawer at the start and end of their shift, and assisting with responsibilities in other departments as needed.

Essential Functions
  • Provide friendly and helpful customer service, including handling difficult situations and resolving customer concerns.
  • Accurately identify produce items and process produce codes.
  • Process all forms of transactions (cash, checks, coupons, and electronic payments: debit, credit, gift cards, EFS, EBT, WIC).
  • Utilize knowledge of store layout and products to assist customers with inquiries and problem‑solving.
  • Follow detailed payment acceptance processes to ensure accuracy and minimize losses.
  • Efficiently and accurately process all store merchandise at the register, maintaining a sufficient scan rate.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records for cash drops and register cash and coin needs.
  • Adhere to company policies, including accounting for items at the bottom of the basket.
  • Comply with California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control and ATF regulations around alcohol sales.
  • Use supervisor assistance to void items or transactions and resolve technical issues.
  • Supervise and operate self‑checkout (SCO) stations, ensuring customer accuracy in scanning items and troubleshooting.
  • Reconcile the assigned till at the end of the shift, balancing each form of payment.
  • Provide accurate information about ongoing promotions and store policies.
  • Report unsafe conditions and suspicious activities to maintain a safe store environment.
  • Validate high‑denomination bills for authenticity and report counterfeit bills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficiency in basic math and cash handling procedures.
  • Understanding of customer service best practices.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with customers and team members.
  • Ability to operate POS systems and other cashier equipment.
  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy in transactions and cash handling.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Adaptability to changing situations, ability to manage multiple demands, and work effectively with diverse personalities.
  • Aptitude for making informed decisions quickly in high‑pressure environments.
Physical Requirements
  • Stand and walk for extended periods during an 8‑hour shift.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Perform repetitive motions such as reaching, bending, stooping, squatting, and handling products.
  • Maintain manual dexterity for handling money and operating POS systems.
  • Move quickly and efficiently to assist customers and manage workload.
  • Utilize cash‑handling tools, including counterfeit bill detection pens.
  • Maintain physical stamina in a fast‑paced environment.
Work Conditions

Work hours vary; availability required on weekends, evenings, and holidays. Typical full‑time shifts are 8 hours. Indoor, climate‑controlled environment with moderate noise. Primary stations include check stand POS, SCO, and count room.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required; on‑the‑job training provided.
  • Previous retail or customer service experience is a plus.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
