FunctionSupports the safe, efficient, and cost-effective production of electric energy by performing certified welds and/or structural welds on equipment such as boilers, boiler tubes, piping systems, and other areas in and around power plant facilities. Performs mechanical maintenance and repair of power plant equipment including assembly, and disassembly of equipment, investigating and correcting mechanical malfunctions. Writes/reviews work scope and hazard/risk assessment of the work assignment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Reasonable and necessary overtime will be required. Shift work may be required.
Maintains certification for ASME boiler and pressure vessel code by performing three welding processes: dissimilar, stainless, and carbon metals at least once per six months.
QualificationsMust qualify as a Welder Journeyman.
Minimum Requirements- Must complete Welder Apprenticeship Program
- Pass the mechanical aptitude test (MASS)
- Successfully pass Written and Hands on Test
- Reads work orders, technical manuals, blueprints, and diagrams related to the work assignment. Writes/reviews work scope and hazard/risk assessment of the work assignment.
- Knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety standards related to Certified Welder work such as personal protective equipment, hazardous material handling, asbestos containing material (ACM) awareness, MSDS, confined space entry, Company LOTO procedures, ladder safety, proper use of negative air filters, and all material contained in the accident prevention manual.
- The safe use of hand, power, and pneumatic tools and measuring devices.
- The safe operation of rigging for moving equipment with mobile equipment and lifting devices.
- Lays out, positions, aligns, and secures parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers, clamps, tack welding, fit-up and alignment gauges. Cleans and prepares base metals using bevellers, grinders, air nibblers and cleaning chemicals.
- Operates manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to cut and fuse mild carbon steel and all alloys, stainless steel, cast steel, cast iron and aluminum segments to perform the following:
Plasma arc cutting, air carbon arc cutting and gouging, oxy-fuel cutting, shield metal arc welding (SMAW) bead and fillet welds, (SMAW) groove welds with backing, gas metal arc welding (GMAW) plate and pipe welds, flex core arc welding (FCAW) plate and pipe welds, oxy-fuel gas welding plate and pipe, and gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) plate and pipe welds. - Performs fit-up, root pass and final fillet and butt welds in flat, vertical, or overhead positions all diameter and thickness on pipe, plate, and tube groove welds.
- Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications. Performs nondestructive testing (NDT) with die penetrate and developer.
- Identifies metals and assesses the appropriate welding procedure with appropriate gases, flow rates and welding wire or rod types.
- Locates and marks the position of installations connections and passage holes and fixtures in structures using measuring instruments such as rulers and levels.
- Cuts pipe and metal material to specifications using tools such as saws, cutting torches, pipe benders, and threaders.
- Modifies, manufactures, or fabricates necessary items to improve plant function and/or operation.
- Must have basic computer skills knowledge
