This position is responsible for transporting students on scheduled routes and to/from special excursions; ensuring the vehicle is in safe operating condition; and ensuring the safety of students during transport, loading, and unloading from buses/vehicles; driving non-CDL vehicles.
Responsibilities- Prepares documentation (e.g. daily mileage and condition reports, incident/accident reports, inspections, disciplinary and positive behavior reports, mileage, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.
- Drives district vehicles to transport regular education and/or special education students over scheduled routes and to/from school and/or field trips in a safe and timely manner.
- Assesses incidents, complaints, accidents, and potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or recommending a resolution.
- Develops communication skills to communicate with parents, students, teachers, administrators, other drivers, dispatchers, etc., for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.
- Drives non-CDL vehicles to transport students to/from school in a safe and timely manner.
- Fuels assigned vehicle (e.g. oil, water, fuel) to maintain the vehicle in a safe operating condition.
- Performs pre-trip inspections (e.g. fluid levels, tire pressure, lights, exterior conditions) to ensure the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meet state requirements.
- Performs first aid as necessary to meet the immediate health care needs of passengers.
- Learns the process of monitoring students and passengers during transit to maintain order and ensure passenger safety.
- Maintains assigned vehicles (interior and exterior) including cleaning floors, windows, seats, and vandalism checks to ensure safety, appearance, and sanitation.
- Performs nonviolent crisis prevention intervention techniques and restraints to de-escalate crises and provide safe care and security for all.
- Other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
- Ability to perform technical tasks with potential need to upgrade skills; safety practices knowledge; certification in first aid/CPR; ability to be licensed to operate school buses and related equipment.
- Physical ability to perform significant lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; climbing and balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling; and fine finger dexterity. Typical work requires 75% sitting, 20% walking, 5% standing, with exposure to temperature extremes and potential risk of injury or illness.
- Basic math skills, ability to read manuals, write documents, and present information; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures; ability to read maps; ability to speak, read, understand, and write English.
- Ability to schedule activities; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment.
- Flexibility to work with others in various circumstances, work with data using defined processes, and operate equipment using defined methods.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals; handle data; and use job-related equipment; problem-solving to identify issues and create action plans.
- Problem-solving with data requires following prescribed guidelines; problem-solving with equipment is moderate to significant.
- Specific ability-based competencies include attention to detail, good judgment, ability to work without close supervision, meeting deadlines, and effective communication in English.
