Job Description

This position will be based at the secondary level, split between Campbell County High School and Twin Spruce Junior High School.

This position starts August 10, 2026.

Master's Degree preferred.

Nature and Scope of Job:

  • To act under the general direction of the Director of Special Education. The Counselor for the Emotionally Disabled will provide counseling services to pupils in treating mental and emotional disorders. The Counselor for the Emotionally Disabled will use established methods and procedures for assessment, planning and implementation of mental health therapy to serve students who suffer from serious and persistent emotional, mental, and/or other behavioral challenges.

Functions

Essential Functions:

  • Assists students to overcome mental health issues that impede their learning and assists them in making sound educational choices.
  • Provides individual and/or group therapy in an ongoing manner as described by the student’s I.E.P.
  • Provides mental health consultation to school staff who work with students in skill programs, including recommendations, interventions, and approaches with specific mental health issues.
  • Works closely with outside agencies that may be involved in the student’s wellbeing, which may include attending meetings when appropriate (i.e. DFS, Juvenile Probation, courts, etc.).
  • Collects and interprets data for use in student placement decisions and instructional programs as needed.
  • Consults with school administrators, faculty, and other special service personnel relative to the curricular offering which meets the abilities, interests, and needs of students.
  • Collaborates with administrators and teachers in identifying students with special abilities and needs and in assisting to advise appropriate classroom and/or program placement.
  • Supports the placement of identified students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment.
  • Communicates effectively with students, staff, parents, and community in a positive and professional manner.
  • Counsels and serves as a resource for parents facing challenges affecting the educational, physical, emotional and social growth of their student receiving special education services.
  • Works cooperatively and collaboratively with staff to provide and facilitate a continuous flow of information concerning students with disability needs.
  • Develops and implements effective counseling programming with individual and/or groups of students receiving special education services to provide assistance in meeting academic and social needs.
  • Provides crisis counseling and consultation as needed.
Other Functions
  • Possess, acquire and maintain a working knowledge of mental health diagnostic criteria, therapeutic interventions, therapeutic skills and techniques, as they relate to working with students with disabilities and mental health.
  • Maintain accurate, complete, legible and correct records as required by law, school district policy, and administrative regulation.
  • Conduct oneself in accordance with professional and ethical standards and abide by the code of ethics commensurate with their licensure.
  • Avails oneself of professional development opportunities in areas of critical need.
  • Follow all school district policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.
Job Qualification

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess knowledge of the current IDEA law, Rules and Regulations Governing Students with Disabilities in Wyoming Public Schools, and local rules and regulations.
  • Possess knowledge of basic computer processes on a personal computer as well as applications in the use of special education software.
  • Possess the ability to follow and successfully complete both written and oral directions.
  • Possess the ability to work with a variety of personality types throughout the work day.
  • Possess sound emotional judgment.
  • Possess the ability to accurately write and complete reports of a technical nature.
