Job Description

This position is 8 hours a day/187-day school year at the YES House.

Position start date is August 19, 2026.

Purpose Statement: The job of Special Programs Education Assistant is performed under the direction of assigned personnel, assisting, tutoring, and training special education and other identified students in a classroom or similar learning situation; providing personal care assistance; and performing classroom clerical tasks in support of the instructional process.

Essential Functions
  • Assists special education students and other identified students under the general direction of the teacher (e.g., reading, explaining words, reading to students, arts and crafts, classroom activities, individual assignments, etc.) to provide an opportunity for them to participate in classroom activities.
  • Attends meetings as requested (e.g., inservice training, workshops, IEPs, etc.) to receive and/or convey information.
  • Confers with teacher(s) (special education and/or mainstream teacher) to assist in evaluating special education student progress and/or implementing IEP objectives.
  • Instructs special education students and other identified students, one on one or in small groups (e.g., math groups, providing proper examples, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills, etc.) to assist students in making progress on their IEP goals.
  • Maintains instructional materials and/or student files/records to ensure availability of items and/or provide reliable information.
  • Monitors students (e.g., library, field trips, classroom activities, lunchroom, bus, etc.) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Performs record keeping and clerical functions (e.g., correcting papers, recording grades, copying, displays, collects paper, distributes supplies, etc.) to support the teacher in preparing records/materials.
  • Records observations and incidents relating to specific students for documentation and/or communication to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff (e.g., administrators, psychologists, teachers, counselors, staff, etc.) to provide information, direction and/or appropriate referrals.
Other Functions
  • Assists other personnel, as may be required, to ensure an efficient and effective work environment.
Job Requirements

Skills: Operating standard office equipment; preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge: Understanding of algebra and/or geometry; written procedures; routine documents; clear speech; complex, multi-step written and oral instructions; age‑appropriate activities; M.A.N.D.T. training; subject matter taught in assigned classrooms; stages of child development.

Ability: Scheduling activities; gathering and collating data; using job‑related equipment; flexibility; problem solving; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; exhibiting patience and compassion; working with frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities: Working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget.

Working Environment: Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; significant fine finger dexterity; generally 50% sitting, 20% walking, and 30% standing; performed under minimal temperature variations and some hazardous conditions.
