PURPOSE STATEMENT:
The job of Instructional Assistant – SPEA – High Needs is to effect positive behavior change in students; assist the teacher in helping identified students reach academic standards; provide referrals to families and/or students; perform clerical related procedures in support of the instructional process, and comply with federal, state, county and district regulations, policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS- Assists in developing procedures and training materials for students with functional academic needs for compliance with district, state, county and federal regulations.
- Attends meetings as requested (e.g., in-service training, workshops, IEPs, Building Intervention Team) for receiving or conveying information.
- Conducts workshops, training, in-service presentations for developing skills and establishing effective relationships with students with high needs.
- Implements programs for students with high needs under direction of the teacher (behavioral plans, lesson plans, functional curriculum) to assist teaching in improving students’ academic and life skill success.
- Instructs identified students one-on-one or in small groups (math groups, reading, behavioral skills, daily living skills, writing, verbal skills) to aid progress on IEP goals.
- Performs record-keeping and clerical functions (e.g., displays, bulletin board, copying, instructional materials, visual classroom materials, collecting & grading papers) to support the teacher in preparing records and materials.
- Prepares written and/or audio-visual materials (daily log, recording observations, lesson materials) to convey student-related information.
- Promotes good habits to improve the quality of student outcomes and encourage student development.
- Responds to inquiries (administrators, teachers, parents) by providing information, direction and/or appropriate referrals.
- Supervises individuals and/or small groups of identified students (field trips, classroom, bus, playground, lunch room) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.
- Assists other personnel as may be required to support completion of their work activities.
Minimum Qualifications Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Skills: Administer first aid; adhere to safety practices; operate standard office equipment; match student to materials and delivery method; prepare and maintain accurate records.
Knowledge: Functional academics; written procedures; routine documents; communication; age-appropriate activities; M.A.N.D.T. training; stages of child development; health standards and hazards;
Applied Behavioral Analysis; behavior modification; safety practices and procedures.
Ability: Schedule activities; gather, collate, classify data; use job-related equipment; work with others in diverse circumstances; analyze issues; create action plans; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; exhibit patience and compassion; work with frequent interruptions.
ResponsibilityResponsibilities include working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job’s functions.
Working EnvironmentThe usual methods of performing the job’s functions require lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 40% sitting, 30% walking, 30% standing, performed under minimal temperature variations and a hazard‑free environment.
