Job Summary

The Aquarist is responsible for the daily care, health, and maintenance of aquatic animals and their habitats, including both freshwater and saltwater aquarium systems. This role ensures high standards of animal husbandry, life support system (LSS) management, exhibit presentation, and regulatory compliance. The Aquarist works closely with leadership and veterinary partners to maintain optimal environmental conditions, support animal wellness, and create engaging, safe, and educational exhibits for public viewing.

The position requires technical expertise, attention to detail, physical stamina, and a strong commitment to animal welfare and safety standards.

Duties/ Responsibilities
  • Perform daily animal husbandry duties including preparing specialized diets, feeding aquatic species, and monitoring behavior, appetite, and overall health.
  • Maintain and manage both freshwater and saltwater aquarium systems to ensure stable and species-appropriate environments.
  • Monitor and maintain Life Support Systems (LSS), including water chemistry parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity, and other critical indicators.
  • Clean tanks, exhibits, filtration systems, pumps, and related equipment to ensure optimal environmental conditions.
  • Assist veterinary staff with medical examinations, diagnostic procedures, and treatment administration.
  • Implement and follow quarantine protocols for new, ill, or injured animals.
  • Build, maintain, and enhance exhibits to ensure they are safe, educational, visually engaging, and representative of natural habitats.
  • Source fish and other aquatic or terrestrial species as needed to support and maintain the vivarium and aquarium collections, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and ethical sourcing standards.
  • Coordinate with approved vendors and suppliers to procure healthy specimens and maintain appropriate inventory levels.
  • Document daily water quality readings, animal health observations, feeding logs, and behavioral records.
  • Support research initiatives and breeding programs as assigned.
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements related to aquatic animal care and transport.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies, equipment, and feed; report needs to leadership in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Education/Certifications/Licenses
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Biology, Zoology, or related field preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s License preferred.
Experience
  • Previous experience in animal husbandry, preferably within an aquarium or aquatic facility setting.
  • Hands‑on experience maintaining saltwater aquarium systems required.
  • Experience with species sourcing, vendor coordination, and quarantine procedures preferred.
  • Experience maintaining water chemistry systems and filtration equipment.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of saltwater aquarium systems and freshwater aquatic environments.
  • Understanding of marine and freshwater species biology and habitat requirements.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry, aquatic filtration systems, and environmental controls.
  • Ability to source fish and other species responsibly while ensuring compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.
  • Strong observational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work safely in, around, and under water.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing 50+ pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in varying environmental conditions.
  • Strong organizational and record‑keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Commitment to safety, animal welfare, and professional standards.
