Heavy Mechanic
The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is seeking a skilled and motivated Heavy Mechanic to join our team in Gillette, Wyoming. In this hands-on role, you will play a critical part in maintaining and repairing a wide range of equipment and vehicles essential to keeping Wyoming's transportation system running safely and efficiently. Responsibilities include diagnosing, repairing, and overhauling diesel and gasoline engines;
performing maintenance on brake systems, transmissions, and hydraulic components; conducting preventative maintenance; and accurately documenting service and repair work. The ideal candidate will have experience in heavy equipment or automotive repair—preferably diesel—along with strong knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems, and the ability to troubleshoot complex issues. A valid driver's license is required, and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and formal technical training are preferred.

- Conducts a wide variety of preventive maintenance and/or repairs on various diesel and automotive equipment, along with other self-propelled or towed equipment.
- Performs safety inspections on all types of diesel and automotive equipment.
- Reads and interprets technical manuals to diagnose and correct problems on vehicles and equipment.
- Rigs and fabricates new equipment to district standards.
- Creates repair orders.
- Responsible for inventory of shop, equipment, and supplies.
- Designs and fabricates parts for tractors, mowers, and machinery for specialized applications.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of diesel and automotive maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of electronic principles and diagnostic tools.
- Knowledge of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment and its parts (i.e., hydraulics, hydrostatics, drive trains, gas, and diesel engine overhauls.)
- Knowledge of grease and oil specifications.
- Knowledge of general servicing of equipment.
- Knowledge of policies and safe work procedures.
Education & Experience Substitution: 2-4 years of progressive work experience (typically in Heavy Mechanics) Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
