Work Year: 11 months (July recess period)

Hours: 8am to 5pm daily

Mileage will be paid for use of private vehicle to perform required duties. Must have valid California Driver's License and have insurance as required by law.

DESCRIPTION OF BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To identify and recruit eligible migrant students, and maintain records in accordance with regulations and laws; serve as a link between program, home, school, and community agencies; encourage parent involvement; monitor student needs and refer to appropriate services; provide workshops, advocacy and support to migrant students and families; analyze data and information to determine eligibility and needs. This position performs a variety of attendance related follow-up activities designed to prevent, minimize, and/or document student attendance and link services to students at all school sites identified under the McKinney-Vento Grant as homeless and Foster Youth.

Employees in this classification receive supervision from a program administrator within a framework of standard policies and procedures.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Locates migrant families and migrant youth who live and work within Gilroy Unified School District attendance boundaries
  • Visits homes, work sites, or other locations, to interview parents or guardians to determine student's eligibility for the Migrant Education Program
  • Receives, reviews and verifies information submitted from families; contacts appropriate information sources to determine program eligibility based on established federal and/or state regulations and guidelines
  • Using the Migrant Student Information Network database enrolls and updates student information
  • Serve as a liaison between parents and community agencies
  • Act as a resource to school staff regarding homelessness, Foster Youth and attendance issues
  • Explains and clarifies Migrant Education Program regulations and guidelines, and available local agency resources
  • Travels throughout the Gilroy Unified School District to meet with families and students regarding the Migrant Education /Foster Youth/McKinney Vento programs.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in both English and Spanish
  • Operates a computer using specialized software, internet and e-mail to complete work assignments; uses other related office equipment (fax machines, copiers, scanners)
  • Communicates and coordinates information regarding students identified who are identified with migrant status
  • Contacts families regarding student attendance, application and enrollment status; including providing assistance in completing required information
  • Assist families with scheduling of medical appointments for students, which may include attending the appointment to provide oral translation services
  • Participates in all parent involvement activities related to the Migrant Education Program; encourages parents to participate in advisory committee meetings and other district/school programs
  • Prepares and distributes reports, forms, correspondence and other documents as needed
  • Provides case management services for migrant children and Foster Youth/McKinney Vento families. This may include:
  • Maintaining regular ongoing contact with students and parents through home or site visits, and phone calls
  • Developing and following up on Migrant Education service plans
  • Documenting pertinent health data, maintaining confidential information and current records of student information
  • Schedules and confirms appointments with Migrant, Foster Youth/McKinney Vento students and families to conduct assessment of student needs and assists in the development of personal goals
  • Acts in support role as advocate for student and family under the Migrant Education Program, Foster Youth/McKinney Vento guidelines
  • Provides information regarding health care resources and community service agencies
  • Serves as a liaison between the families and schools, community service agencies and other program staff assisting with needed services
  • Attends workshops, in-service training, and other programs designed to update knowledge of the Migrant Education Program and Foster Youth/McKinney Vento
  • Communicates and interacts in a professional manner among different groups
  • Follows ethical standards, including maintaining confidentiality
  • Performs other related duties
