Purpose Statement
The job of Parent Educator is done for the purpose/s of empowering families with the knowledge and skills necessary to support the development of their children during the crucial early years by providing support for caregivers prenatal to kindergarten entry; promoting their involvement and providing information and/or direction; partnering with families in goal setting and resource connections.
Essential Functions
- Assesses individual children's developmental progress for the purpose of providing feedback to parents on areas of strength and areas for growth.
- Communicates with families before and after visits for the purpose of clarifying next steps and follow through.
- Conducts home visits for the purpose of increasing parent knowledge, identifying potential health and developmental concerns and connecting families to community resources.
- Develops and implements personalized visit plans based on family goals and identified areas of improvement using Parents as Teachers curriculum for the purpose of educating parents on child development, development-centered parenting, and family well‑being.
- Facilitates group connections (e.g. parent education workshops, recruitment events, parent-child interaction experiences, etc.) for the purpose of increasing parent-child interactions, informing caregivers of different aspects of child development and supporting the educational and social‑emotional needs of families.
- Maintains a variety of confidential and non‑confidential manual and electronic records (e.g. work/appointment schedules, assessments, planning guides, personal visit records, demographics, etc.) for the purpose of documenting and/or providing reliable information.
- Participates in a variety of meetings and professional development (e.g. staff meetings, educational seminars/webinars, department in‑service, reflective supervision, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and remaining knowledgeable of program guidelines.
- Prepares a variety of documents, reports and written materials (e.g. screening summaries, visit records, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information to parents and/or staff, providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
- Provides support to parents (e.g. by building rapport, engaging in active listening and conversation, referral to appropriate professionals and/or literature, etc.) for the purpose of promoting healthy child development and family well‑being.
- Refers children and parents to outside agencies for the purpose of meeting the needs of the families.
- Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external sources (e.g. early education teachers, outside agencies, parents and/or students, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or direction as may be required.
- Responds to potential emergencies encountered during home visits for the purpose of ensuring safety of children and/or personnel.
Other Functions
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the team.

Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: infant and preschool development stages; parenting methods; and community resources;
age appropriate activities/behaviors; assessment instruments and techniques.
