Job Description

Purpose Statement

The Paraprofessional – Special Education Tier 3 assists in the supervision, physical and emotional/mental health care, and instruction of special needs students in the regular classroom or a self‑contained classroom; administers medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional; relieves teachers of clerical tasks; models skills for assignments; implements instruction plans; monitors behavior; and provides information to staff.

Essential Functions
  • Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., toileting, diapering, feeding, colostomy bags, medication, diabetic management, transfers, navigating, etc.) to meet immediate health care needs.
  • Administers tests, homework, make‑up work, etc. to support teachers in the classroom.
  • Communicates with supervising instructional staff, professional support personnel, and others (as instructed) to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
  • Evaluates students throughout the school day to take action and/or provide referrals.
  • Maintains instructional materials, equipment, and technology, and/or manual and electronic files/records to ensure availability of items and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitors individual and/or groups in a variety of settings (e.g., restrooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, library, drills, field trips, assemblies) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Participates in meetings and in‑service presentations to acquire and convey information relative to job functions.
  • Performs routine clerical duties (e.g., filing, typing, attendance, grading, bulletin board) to support teachers.
  • Prepares research‑based lessons appropriate for individuals or small groups for implementing goals for remediation of deficits.
  • Promotes good academic, social, and emotional habits to improve student outcomes.
  • Provides, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure student success.
  • Researches resources and methods (e.g., intervention and instructional techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources) to determine appropriate instructional approaches.
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g., injured student, fights) to resolve safety concerns and direct to appropriate personnel.
  • Responds to inquiries to solve problems, provide information, and/or make referrals.
  • Serves as chief source of information for substitute teachers or acts as the substitute teacher to implement the defined course of study.
