Job Overview
St. Andrew the Apostle is looking for a robust music director and organist familiar with the Treasury of Sacred Music and the tradition of Gregorian Chant to plan, rehearse, and execute music for Mass, along with maintaining and building upon the Sacred Music program already established at the parish.
Responsibilities- Selects and directs music for the Saturday 4 PM, Sunday 8 AM & 10:30 AM Masses, along with any weddings, funerals, Holy Days, or other special Masses for the parish and school (i.e. graduation, sacraments, etc.). The 4 PM & 8 AM Mass music consists of singing/playing hymns with a cantor. The 10:30 AM ‘Principal’ Mass consists of Gregorian chant and polyphony with the Women’s Schola or Combined Choir.
- Parish Organist: accompanies hymns, propers, ordinary, and all parts of Sung Mass, along with individual repertoire for preludes, postludes, offertory, and postcommunion. Organ committee for new installation.
- Trains volunteers to cantor, sub on the organ (when needed), and sing in choir. Manages all choir recruitment and auditioning for the Combined Choir, Women’s Schola, and Parish Children’s Choir. Sets cantoring schedule. Runs School Children’s Choir for two Thursday School Masses each month and one Sunday All School Mass each month.
- Develops, improves and expands choirs’ chant and polyphonic repertoire. Selects appropriate polyphony according to the liturgical day and season.
- Develops Worship Aids (translations, seasonal Ordinary, etc.) and other educational resources for the liturgy and sacred music. Runs frequent workshops for singers for developing chant and polyphonic singing techniques.
- Maintains and expands music library.
- Helps oversee sound system and upkeep for choir area, including microphones, hymnals/binders, and setup.
- Communicates with clergy in singing Mass parts (seasonal Ite Missa Est, Sung Gospel, Sung Passion, etc.); coordinates with clergy if there is anything different happening in the liturgy (a procession, etc.)
- Missal subscription and copyright upkeep.
- Expected to play all funeral and wedding masses.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Music or equivalent experience required.
- Knowledge of the role of Sacred Music throughout the Liturgical year. Proficiency in singing and conducting Gregorian Chant and polyphony.
- Proficiency in playing the organ.
Full‑time, exempt position. Reports to the pastor.
