The School Resource Officer (SRO) serves as a certified law enforcement officer assigned to a school or group of schools. The SRO works in collaboration with school administrators, faculty, and students to provide a safe and secure learning environment. In addition to enforcing laws, the SRO acts as an educator and mentor, helping promote a positive relationship between law enforcement and youth.
EssentialFunctions and Basic Duties
- Provide a visible and accessible presence on school grounds to deter criminal behavior.
- Enforce applicable local, state, and federal laws.
- Investigate criminal incidents occurring on campus and coordinate with school officials.
- Respond to emergencies and provide first-responder services in crisis situations.
- Assist in the development and implementation of school safety protocols and emergency plans.
- Build trust and serve as a positive role model for students.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to students, including conflict mediation and de-escalation.
- Work closely with school staff to identify and address issues related to school safety and student behavior.
- Serve as a liaison between the school and the local law enforcement agency.
- Participate in meetings and school functions as needed
- Performs related work as required.
- Certified law enforcement officer in the Commonwealth of Kentucky
- Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an equivalent GED certificate.
- Successful completion of required law enforcement training DOCJT.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Must be at least 21 years of age by Final date to receive applications.
- Must be a United States citizen.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony.
- Ability to pass a physical examination and a physical agility test.
- Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening test.
- Knowledge of criminal law, particularly laws of arrest, search and seizure, protection of Constitutional rights of citizens, and admissibility of evidence.
- Experience working with youth or in an educational environment.
- Specialized training in juvenile law, crisis intervention, or trauma-informed practices.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations of the Police Department and governing federal, state, and local statutes and ordinances.
- Skilled in the use and care of firearms.
- Good physical condition and ability to maintain satisfactory fitness level.
