Basic FunctionAssist a teacher in providing instruction to individual or small groups, typically in programs with exceptional children or equivalent programs; monitor and report student progress.
Reports To: Principal or designee
Qualifications- 48 college credits or passing score on the Kentucky Para educator Assessment (KPA)
- Demonstrated competent language skills
- Effective communication skills
- Successful experience working with children, individually or in groups, including the ability to read and understand meaning of words and ideas associated with them and to use them effectively
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
- Ability to operate instructional and office equipment
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer operations and functions
- Knowledge of basic record‑keeping techniques
- Experience in a diverse workplace
Instructional Assistant II employees support certified teachers by executing various assistance tasks within a standard classroom environment. Instructional Assistant II employees operate within a more intricate program, usually necessitating advanced skills and greater autonomy in their actions.
Representative Duties- Regular and reliable attendance is a requirement and essential function of the position
- Tutor individuals or small groups of students typically with a disability or handicap, reinforcing and implementing instruction as directed by the teacher; maintain records of student progress
- Participate as a member of an instructional team including remediation teams; develop appropriate relationships with parents and team members; serve as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team
- Transport students to and from activities and assist in preparation for treatment as required
- Read, understand, and assist in implementing, recording, and monitoring students’ individual education plan (IEP)
- Monitor and report behavior of students according to approved procedures; report progress regarding student performance and behavior; check and assist students with lab work as necessary
- Assist with the supervision of students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, and field trips
- Assist in routine classroom duties such as collecting materials, preparing teaching centers and bulletin boards, keeping files of instructional materials, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized classroom
- Assist teacher in implementing all policies and regulations governing student conduct for the classroom and related school activities
- Assist, perform, and maintain records of student health services as delegated, supervised, and/or trained by a nurse or other health care provider. These services may include, but are not limited to, the administering of medication, external catheter care, administration of feedings via a gastrostomy tube when the tube is in a mature stoma site with sustained skin integrity, blood glucose testing when a sample is obtained from a capillary site, and selected ambulation, positioning, turning, or exercise program
- Contact parents of students who are absent; make home visits as necessary
- Assure the health and safety of students by following health and safety practices and regulations
- Direct group activities of students as assigned; assist in monitoring lunchroom and playground activities as assigned; assist in emergency drills, assemblies, play periods and field trips
- Perform bus monitoring duties as needed
- Participate in meetings and in‑service training programs as assigned
Perform other duties assigned by the teacher, principal, and/or superintendent or his/her designee
The work at times requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull light weights. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
EvaluationPerformance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Glasgow Board of Education’s policy on evaluation of classified personnel. Evaluations will be conducted by the building principal or his/her designee.
