Chartered Building Surveyor - Associate Director

At Jacobs, we’re challenging today to reinvent tomorrow by solving the world’s most critical problems for thriving cities, resilient environments, mission‑critical outcomes, operational advancement, scientific discovery and cutting‑edge manufacturing, turning abstract ideas into realities that transform the world for good.

Building Surveying at Jacobs sits within our Cities & Places business unit – a multidisciplinary environment where engineers, architects, surveyors, designers, place‑makers, project managers and transport planners collaborate to deliver coordinated, value‑driven solutions for clients across the UK and internationally. From advisory and consulting through feasibility, planning, design, programme delivery and lifecycle asset management, we’re helping create a more connected and sustainable world.

We are looking for an experienced Chartered Building Surveyor (MRICS) to join our UK team in Glasgow, Leeds, Birmingham or Manchester. The role plays a key part in delivering a diverse mix of building surveying services across commercial, industrial and public‑sector assets for clients spanning transport infrastructure, aviation, commercial development, healthcare, education, residential, industrial and mixed‑use environments.

As Associate Director, you will lead major work streams such as large‑scale condition surveys and fire‑safety remediation programmes, prepare and review specifications, tender documentation and design information, and produce high‑quality technical reports including condition surveys, options appraisals, heritage statements, due‑diligence outputs and RIBA Stage 2/3 contributions. You will champion technical integrity, meet current UK construction requirements and health and safety legislation, and support informed decision‑making across a wide range of assets and sectors.

You will also play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of talent, guiding and developing junior colleagues through training and professional progression. Client‑facing skills will enable you to build trusted relationships, influence work streams, expand our presence across the Scottish regions and the wider UK, and contribute to proposals, fees and client presentations that showcase the value and expertise of our team.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivering building surveying services across a variety of sectors and asset types.
  • Leading major work streams, condition surveys and fire‑safety remediation programmes.
  • Preparing tender documents, specifications and high‑quality technical reports.
  • Providing technical leadership and ensuring compliance with UK construction laws and health and safety regulations.
  • Mentoring and developing junior colleagues, including supervising APC candidates.
  • Representing the firm in client meetings, proposals and presentations.

** Requirements**

  • To be Chartered and hold MRIC /FRIC accreditation.
  • Private practice or consultancy experience with knowledge of relevant legislation such as health and safety, party wall, building regulations, planning and the Building Safety Act, PAS 9980.
  • Proven experience surveying the condition of existing buildings, identifying and analysing defects, proposing repair solutions and providing advice on design, construction, maintenance, repair and refurbishment.
  • Experience supervising APC training, counsellor or assessor is desirable.
  • SC level security clearance is advantageous.

The role is a hybrid with 3 days office attendance.

** Benefits**

  • Up to 10% pension contribution.
  • 24 days of holiday (+10 days purchased).
  • Free medical and income protection insurance.
  • Flexible working arrangements to support well‑being and productivity.
  • Opportunities to participate in global giving and volunteering programmes.

As a disability confident employer, we will interview disabled candidates who best meet the criteria. We welcome applications from candidates who are seeking flexible working and from those who may not meet all the listed requirements for a role.
