Description

JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse utilizes the nursing process to assess patient needs, plan and implement patient care activities, direct, and evaluate the delivery of nursing care through other members of the nursing team. The ER nurse is accountable for delivery of patient care in the ER during the shift. S/he is responsible for meeting established standards of nursing care, managing assigned personnel, and promoting collaboration among disciplines, while demonstrating loyalty to the philosophy, policies, and practices of the institution.

Job Requirements
  • Holds an active Registered Nurse license and is eligible to practice in the state of Kentucky.
  • ACLS and PALS to be completed by the end of the orientation period.
  • TNCC required within 6-12 months of hire date into the department; CEN certification recommended.

  • Must be able to follow directions and perform work according to department standards when no directions are given.
  • Must be emotionally mature, able to prioritize tasks, and able to function effectively under stress.

- Staff RN

  • Collects pertinent health data using appropriate assessment techniques.
  • Ensures data collection is systemic and ongoing; analyzes assessment data to determine patient problems.
  • Documents assessment data to facilitate planning of outcomes and care.
  • Develops and revises a plan of care in collaboration with the patient and significant others.
  • Routinely evaluates and revises the plan of care based on patient assessment.
  • Communicates and collaborates with other health care providers to ensure continuity of care.
  • Implements interventions safely, appropriately, and in a timely manner to aid attainment of patient goals.
  • Documents interventions in a timely and appropriate manner; provides patient and family teaching as part of the plan of care.
  • Serves as a team leader for a group of personnel providing nursing care to multiple patients.
  • Assigns tasks or delegates care based on patient needs and the skill level of staff.
  • Operates or supervises safe operation of patient care equipment and ensures narcotics security during the shift.
  • Contributes to professional development of peers by sharing knowledge and providing feedback.
  • Maintains accurate records, transcription of orders, and confidentiality.
  • Floats to other areas as assigned with a positive attitude; responds to floating requests appropriately.
  • Answers telephone, call system, and greets visitors professionally; routes information as needed.

  • Participates in 75% of staff meetings and completes competency assignments as evidenced by attendance records.

Essential Functions - ER Specific

  • Operates or supervises safe operation of specialized patient care equipment including defibrillator, suctioning equipment, pleur-evac, ventilator, central monitoring system, and cautery.
  • Performs initial triage assessment to collect data related to the patient’s chief complaint.
  • Initiates ongoing assessment of problems within the emergency care system; analyzes acuity and determines appropriate interventions.
  • Nurses assigned triage have a minimum of one year of emergency department experience and completed triage training; demonstrate ability to use a valid triage system and document relevant data.
  • Assesses skin integrity for trauma, nursing home residents, and incapacitated patients admitted to the Emergency center.
