Under immediate direction, performs routine heavy labor related to cemetery operations and maintenance.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties
  • Plants trees and shrubs, removes dead trees and shrubs, waters, and trims cemetery grounds
  • Marks off, digs, and fills graves using sod cutter, backhoe, shovels, dump trucks, and other equipment
  • Assists at funerals by hauling flowers and equipment
  • Cleans gutters, culverts, and other drainage structures
  • Loads and unloads stone, gravel, dirt, asphalt, timber, and heavy mechanical equipment
  • Assists in semi-skilled work such as plumbing, carpentry, and concrete
  • Mows and rakes grass and leaves
  • Shovels snow for public and employee safety
  • Performs related duties as assigned
Qualifications Training and Experience
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or its equivalent (GED)
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Ability to successfully complete background and drug screenings
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of grounds maintenance practices and the safe use of tools and related equipment
  • Ability to learn and follow procedures for grave preparation, grounds maintenance, and funeral support
  • Ability to safely operate assigned vehicles, machinery, and equipment
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and carry out assigned work accurately
  • Ability to perform basic measurements and layout work associated with grave preparation and maintenance activities
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions and follow established safety practices around equipment, excavations, and work areas
  • Ability to work cooperatively with supervisors, coworkers, funeral personnel, and the public
  • Ability to conduct oneself appropriately and respectfully around funeral services, cemetery visitors, and grieving families
