Sourcing Project Lead Job Description
The Sourcing Project Lead is responsible for coordinating external supply chain activities from the kick-off through execution until project close-out, in line with the project strategy and team objectives. This role involves maintaining the sourcing strategy and animating the project team to ensure successful supply chain operations.
Responsibilities- Define and execute the external supply chain strategy with stakeholders, adhering to project requirements and timelines.
- Prepare the external supply chain project plan, focusing on strategy, schedule, and budget.
- Achieve the savings target for the project by utilizing standard levers available through the Sourcing Team, while meeting cost, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Coordinate external supply chain activities with category managers for assigned projects.
- Work with Category Managers to develop new suppliers and alternative sources of materials, aiming for high quality and low cost, with a focus on best cost country (BCC).
- Participate in the planning, scheduling, and production control of the project.
- Maintain the project purchasing dashboard using standard tools.
- Consolidate and validate internal and external budgets for sourcing, logistics, and quality.
- Track and manage project costs and time variances, taking necessary actions to avoid budget deviations.
- Interface with project management and engineering to meet material targets and sourcing resource requirements.
- Identify critical and strategic suppliers with category management.
- Focus on project objectives, including contractual conditions, purchasing budget, planning, and quality.
- Anticipate available discounts and maintain the committed budget.
- Set external supply chain planning for purchasing and delivery teams, ensuring consistency with overall project planning.
- Collaborate with the external supply chain team to achieve successful project milestones and comply with deadlines for supply chain deliverables.
- Summarize external supply chain activities for the project.
- Review with stakeholders and functional management the project external supply chain budget, risk and opportunities matrix, and ensure progress and updates.
- Ensure compliance with company procedures and processes.
- Participate in BCC sourcing to optimize purchasing value.
- Identify underperforming or non‑performing suppliers during the project life cycle.
- Participate in various Value Analysis and Kaizen blitz projects to improve sourcing.
- Utilize company software applications such as SAP, Pyramid, DMT, Vault Document Storage, and Microsoft applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
- Purchasing and procurement expertise.
- Strategic sourcing and negotiation skills with knowledge of legal language.
- Project management experience, particularly project‑based purchasing.
- Ability to manage purchase orders and project documentation.
- At least 5 years of experience in purchasing, strategic sourcing, or supply chain roles.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- ERP experience, preferably with SAP.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work in a team, prioritize, multi‑task, and organize.
- Capability to read and understand engineering drawings and communicate technical information effectively.
Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Experience with recent internships or relevant experience from a bachelor's degree can be considered.
- Strategic mindset and flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
This position operates in an office environment, sharing space with 10 other Sourcing Project Leads and collaborating virtually with others. The workspace is a cubicle setting in a beautiful building with a positive culture. The role offers a hybrid model with two days in the office, with more in‑office presence required during the initial training period.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Glen Allen, VA.
Pay And BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $27.50 - $38.50/hr.
