General Statement of Duties

Assesses, diagnoses, and treats individuals and families with psychiatric disorders using full scope of professional training and therapeutic skills, including the prescription of medication and administration of psychotherapy medicines and psychiatric care for patients receiving mental health services; performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

Psychiatric nurse position provides treatment, support, and rehabilitation to adults with a serious mental illness on the ACT Team. Duties include mental health and nursing assessments, service linkage, case management, medication monitoring, family support, assistance with daily living, crisis intervention. All services have a recovery focus. Provide on call support, hours include weekends and evenings.

This is a specialized position and due to the nature of work performed, graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and a certificate as a registered professional nurse is desired to meet the position qualifications.
  • Assesses, diagnoses, and treats individuals and families with psychiatric disorders using the full scope of professional training and therapeutic skills; provides psychiatric care, including administration of prescribed medications and therapies; collaborates with patients, families, and treatment providers; performs other duties as assigned.
  • Sound knowledge of psychiatric nursing principles, psychopathology, psycho dynamics, and psychopharmacology; familiarity with medical
  • terminology and DSM codes; ability to administer medications and treatments safely; ability to teach health and hygiene practices.
  • Skill in performing technical nursing procedures such as injections and venipuncture; ability to maintain accurate medical records and prepare reports; proficiency in using medical instruments and equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately with patients, families, and stakeholders; ability to maintain professionalism in stressful situations; ability to build trusting relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound medical decisions in critical situations when immediate guidance is unavailable; ability to synthesize data and make accurate diagnoses and treatment recommendations.
  • May provide guidance to nursing aides or direct service staff; collaborates effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Works in clinical and community settings; may require travel to various locations; subject to exposure to communicable diseases and emergencies.
  • Manual dexterity, visual and hearing acuity sufficient for accurate evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment; physical ability to provide emergency care and work safely with patients.
Additional Information

Salary will be commensurate with the successful candidate's experience and qualifications.

Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

May require of a valid driver's license to perform assigned duties at various locations Countywide.

May be required to work a rotating on-call schedule.

A criminal history record check and fingerprinting is conducted on all persons conditionally offered employment, including a conditional offer of initial employment, or a conditional offer to promote, demote, or laterally transfer an employee. TB Screening and Child Abuse Registry Check required, if offered employment

QMHP certification; must hold or be qualified to work toward licensure or accreditation for the appropriate discipline.

State or Federal Funding Clause

This agreement and the continuation of this position are contingent upon the availability of specific special revenue funds.

Minimum Requirements

Graduation from a post-secondary nursing program, and two years previous relevant nursing experience in a psychiatric care setting; OR, any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
