Job Summary

Assists instructional staff in implementing plans and programs related to academic or specialized areas; performs non‑instructional tasks to support teaching and learning. Works directly with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subjects introduced by the teacher in all subject areas. Assists teachers with planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional lessons; observes students, assesses progress; participates in staff development; and prepares instructional materials.

Work is carried out under the direction of the principal and professional staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work directly with students individually or in small groups to reinforce subjects introduced by the teacher.
  • Assist teachers in planning, implementing, and evaluating instructional lessons, methods, strategies, and materials to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Organize materials for each group/student; set up learning stations, laboratories, and activity centers.
  • Supervise students while working; assist students having difficulty.
  • Lead and/or facilitate group discussions, sharing time, individual recitation or individual work.
  • Prepare a variety of instructional materials including posters, charts, transparencies, game boards and cards, and other related materials; assist with bulletin boards, exhibits and displays.
  • Observe and gather assessment data on students; discuss observations and progress with instructional staff.
  • Provide supervision during lunch, playground and bus duties as directed.
  • Assist in the administration of tests and assessment instruments; record data on record books, master charts, and assessment forms.
  • Perform clerical tasks such as correcting work papers/tests, keeping daily attendance, maintaining student folders and records, and other related tasks.
  • Work with teachers and students on special projects, lessons and assignments.
  • Assist in storing, inventorying, and requisitioning instructional materials, supplies, and equipment as directed.
  • Aid in housekeeping tasks for laboratories, learning stations, work areas, or other instructional settings.
  • Attend and actively participate in staff development activities.
  • Refer or accompany disruptive students to the principal.
  • Accompany students on field trips.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.
Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency Certificate required.
  • For employment in a Title I‑funded school, 48 college credit hours or a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment issued by ETS or NES is required.
Experience
  • Previous training and/or experience in an educational or instructional environment preferred.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Willingness to learn and implement instructional methods, strategies, and techniques to assist teachers.
  • Ability to exercise considerable patience, courtesy, tact and good judgement when working with students, teachers, administrators, employees and parents.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with diverse communities and develop outreach strategies to encourage parental involvement.
  • Ability to work effectively and engage diverse parents/guardians with varied communication styles, levels of skill and experience to support their child’s education.
  • Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g., Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite).
Licenses and Certifications
  • Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.
  • For Title I schools, a passing score on a paraprofessional assessment issued by ETS or NES is required.
